I think I walked by myself starting from 5th grade. We only lived a block from school though.

Nope, we always lived about 10 miles from school so no walking for us! I used to think it would be so cool to be able to walk to school though.

I think I walked to school without my parents from 1st grade... maybe even in kindergarten. I walked with my best friend who lived around the corner and then with my sister too sometimes once she started school. School was maybe a little more than half a mile away from my house.

I walked to school from around 1st grade. My older brothers were usually with me.

K-2 grade our school was half a block away so my dad would walk us to the corner and watch us cross the street and walk in the building. 3-6 our school was further away but we got on the bus at the school 1/2 block away so we walked their either with dad walking to the corner or just with my sister and whatever other neighbor kids were walking. Middle school was too far away. High school was within walking distance but dad drove me with only a couple of exceptions until I could drive.

I didn't live close enough to walk. But my mother was so over-protective, there's no way she ever would have let me walk to school--or anywhere else--without an adult. No walking ANYWHERE for me.

We lived 10 miles from town, so not even an option to walk to school. I used to have to get on the bus super early or get a ride with my dad if he was subbing at school that day.

This is a big point of contention between me and my husband since he used to walk to and from school at a very young age- he is fine with it and calls me overprotective. I guess we'll see what kind of neighborhood we live in and how far we are from school when the time comes. I think from Jr High on they would be ok walking to school without an adult.

I didn't live anywhere near school, but we were in a very rural area at the time and the bus stop was a good 1/2-1 mile walk since there was just one stop that everyone had to meet at. Just about everyone walked by themselves to it. Only the kids that lived more than a couple miles away got driven and dropped off, and most of them just carpooled. Kids also rode bikes to the stop by themselves and locked them up on trees.
So basically, if someone really wanted to kidnap us, it would have been really easy.
