When do kids start lying/fibbing? I hate to call it just lying because they're kids. My LO still hasn't figured that one out yet. She is 3.5 but will always tell the truth. "Yes, I hit my sister" I'm not complaining but I know eventually kids start to fib so they don't get into trouble! I'm curious when kids catch on to that...

Oh my LO is only 22 months but he is always making stuff up! Like if DH asks him what he had for dinner he will say something completely different, and he will make up whole stories about things that happened that day which are completely untrue! If he's done something wrong he does usually admit to it - but he will definitely lie about whether he has pooped if asked!

My 3 year old is catching on. But so far the only time I've caught him fibbing is when I've heard him say something he shouldn't, like shut up or stupid, and I asked what he said. "I didn't say nuffin', Mommy"

Mine makes up stuff all the time. She's 2.

I think there's a difference between fibbing and making things up. Dd1 (nearly 3.5) is a great storyteller, but I think that's just her imagination and not a deliberate falsehood (there would be no reason for it with the stories she makes up). She doesn't usually lie - if DD2 is crying and I ask DD1 why, she'll usually tell me that she hit her or pushed her etc.
I think it is usually closer to 4 that kids start deliberately lying to avoid getting in trouble, and developmentally, it's a good thing as it shows higher thinking skills. Not that we want our kids to lie, but it shows they are developing more complex thought processes.

She's 3.5 and it started within the last year that she'd make up stories about witches and mermaids. In the last several months she's started telling me she can do things because "grandma said". She's testing my limits. When she's asking for something I won't allow I call her on it, but most of the time I let it go, imagination is good.
