Am I insane to consider making our tiny laundry room (6ft x 5ft) into baby's room? We have 2 bedrooms upstairs and 1 downstairs. I was thinking of having baby in our room in the halo for the first 1-2 months and then possibly put a crib in that laundry room space? The other alternative is to put baby in DD's room (age 5) after she moves out of the halo. But, I worry how that will go, especially since DD is a terrible sleeper and wants ALL the lights on. What shpuld we do?!

My BIL and SIL did this! They had 2 bed up, 2 down, and upstairs laundry room. They had a small utility/mechanical room downstairs that they were able to move their laundry to, then made the laundry room into a nursery. Theirs was a bit bigger though, closer to a standard sized room, maybe 7 x 10? Perfectly adequate space for an infant. Theirs also had a utility sink which they loved for washing hands after changing diapers, and soaking poopy clothes! I think your room could work as long as it seems well ventilated?

We made a hallway in our condo where the laundry closet was the baby's room for awhile.
Even ran the dryer while he was sleeping. We just hung a black out curtain to block out the light and ran a mini fan to keep air flow going.

My kids both slept in some pretty unconventional places as babies. We had each of them in pack in plays in our walk in closet for a while...and when we stayed with my parents for a bit while we had some renovation projects going on at our house, my younger daughter slept in their laundry room (similar size to yours) in a pack n play. It actually worked really well because it was so dark.

Would your w/d stay in the room? Or is it a lot of work to make the transition to nursery happen?
Our dd slept in a pack and play in our room for a year until I was comfortable enough to move her into ds's room (3 at the time). I would probably just keep baby in your room longer and then put her with dd.

@josina: I should have mentioned that we also have washer dryer hookups downstairs. DH isn't crazy about the hassle of moving it all though.
@caitcat: I thought the no windows aspect might be a sleep advantage too!

@winter_wonder: We live in an old, strange house, and the laundry is in one of the bedrooms. Our kids both slept in that bedroom until about a year ago (and the people we bought from had the same set up). It really wasn’t a big deal, but it did somewhat limit when we felt comfortable doing laundry. They slept soundly enough that we did occasionally start laundry loads after they were asleep.

@cake2017: no window, but does have an air vent. I wonder if the air circulation would be terrible? It used to be a bathroom that was converted to a laundry room so it also has one of those bathroom fans too.

@winter_wonder: I would add a fan(portable one) for circulation when the baby sleeps! Speak to the pediatrician for recommendations too and just have a baby monitor so you monitor as well! That’s for any room and sleeping arrangements in my opinion!
