TBH my first thought when I read the thread title was that you were talking about the magazine. I do like the name though. And as far as putting him in the line of fire, it'll be a few years before he's conscious of a magazine having the same name and by then he'll be a 13 year old boy who thinks it's cool.

I spent so much time agonizing over names when I was pregnant! I think that if you like the name go for it, because if someone wants to pick on him it won't matter. Go with the name you love, because you'll be saying it for the rest of your life (on a side note, my MIL, whom I dislike very deeply, said she hated both of the names we ended up choosing for our children and that will always be in the back of my mind, so keeping the name a secret is a good idea!)

This is not my style but if you and DH love it then that is great! As far as spelling, i like it better without the y, so maksim. He will be spelling it for his whole life so i would keep it simple, plus i feel like there is a trend of putting ys in boy names and using them for girls, but that may just be me.

What about Maxson? Sounds similar, but easier to spell and less likely to get confused with Maxim.

I am not a fan of the unique spelling (Maksym). I have a super common name, but I love that I never have to spell it for anyone. I like Maksim. I don't mind the spelling of Maxsim, but I think the "x" already makes the sound you are going for, and the addition of the "s" behind it makes the pronunciation a little confusing (but I can see why you wouldn't want to spell it Maxim).

I always try to think about names from the perspective of a teacher and a future employer...would a teacher have a hard time spelling or pronouncing it and would an employer want to have someone with that name representing their company...think along the lines of answering a phone call or on a business card.

It's a VERY popular name in Russia.

Personally, I think it's weird and even a teensy bit rude to take a name from another culture and change the spelling and pronunciation, plus you'd end up with a fair amount of confusion from anyone who's from that culture. In the US, I DEFINITELY think of the magazine when I hear "Maxim" pronounced "MAX-im" instead of "mahk-SEEM." I agree with other suggestions - go with Maxon, or even Maximilian.

And yeah, I also get turned off by "unique" spellings. Way too many random "y" vowel substitutions in baby names these days for like no reason.

I have a friend named Maksim, he's Russian. He changed the spelling and is now known as Maxim. I never thought about the magazine until you pointed it out. I think he changed it because it's much easier for Americans to pronounce. Btw, I think he's a stockbroker now.

I like the name, it's unique but very familiar. Manly too!

My first thought was the DWTS dancer as well. I'll be honest and say that don't like Maksym at all. That just looks misspelled. Maksim is fine since it is the original Russian spelling but I probably wouldn't use the name unless I was Russian. I like Max.

I thought of the dancer, I don't care for the spelling with a y, personally I just don't like when a y is used instead of the normal vowel. I do like the name espcially nickname Max.

How about the French name Maxime? It is also pronounced mahk-SEEM. I like the name and prefer the spelling alternatives without the y.

When I first saw it, I didn't think of the men's mag, but I did assume it would be pronounced "Mahk-seem."
