I did marry outside of my religion. My husband is not religious, but both families have accepted us. I hope your co-worker's BF's family will open up once they meet her.

@PurplePeony: Great response! Exactly what I would say. DH and I are the same as you guys, he's atheist, I'm agnostic.

I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.

I'm agnostic and DH is Christian. We have friends of many different faiths and we would never have an issue with our child marrying anyone of any faith nor would we have a problem with our child having a faith that is different from ours.

DH and I are both Jewish, and hoped to marry in our religion mostly because of past experiences in serious relationships with people outside our religion (m ex was Hindu, his was a traditional African religion). It makes our relationship easier in that we are on the same page about a lot of issues, but we'd be open and accepting of our LOs partner no matter what religon (or gender) they are, especially after asking the same of our parents in the past.

I am a Christian, but i really don't care about that whenit comes to DDs choices wrt marriage. Her happiness is paramount, everything else is extra. I come from a mixed religious background. My mum was a Muslim, married my dad who was Catholic and at some point they both became Protestant. It doesn't matter IMO and it is not worth destroying potentially wonderful relationships. I have seen it so many times, sad.

I care more about whether he has a job that what religion he is.

DH and I are both Christian, just of different denominations. It definitely makes things easier when it comes to certain issues. I wouldn't want to dissuade my DS from marrying the love of his life b/c she was a different religion than us. I think I would want them to really talk about how they are going to raise their children and what they'll teach them regarding religion since both of us are pretty strong in our faiths.

I think I'd be a bit more sad if it were someone who was athiest. If she respected our religion though, I'd be ok with it. It's all about tolerance and respect. Don't disrespect me or my beliefs, and I will do the same for you...and you can practice and believe whatever you want!

@PurplePeony: I feel the same way. Because we aren't religious at all, it's a strange question. I wouldn't "evaluate" (can't think of the right word, judge sounds too harsh) a person based on their religion, but on their individual morals and how they treat other people.

I like the saying, "Your beliefs don't make you a good person, your behavior does."

For example, if my future children's future spouses were opposed to gay marriage because of religious reasons (or any reason for that matter) I would have a lot of trouble with that. I would have trouble if my children have that opinion as well.

ETA: In general, I think religion should be internalized. That is to say, one's religion should impact how that they make decisions for themselves, not how they think other people should make decisions. That would be the ideal situation if my child married someone religious.

After dealing with VERY extreme backlash from MY family for dating my DH we would never disallow our children to date someone based on race, culture or religion, etc.
The most important thing to us is the well being and happiness of our child. Everything else is second fiddle.

I never understood my family for threatening to disowning me and not blessing my happiness. I still don't understand it now. Thankfully they have seen the error of their ways.

As long as she wasn't marrying into a dangerous cult, or a religious sect that encouraged extreme inequality and submission of women, I would be totally fine with it, and welcome the diversity in the family.

I want my daughter's relationship with God (or lack thereof) to be made completely by choice, and not shoved down her throat in any way. I find faith and spirituality to be an extremely personal journey, and not one you simply inherit by blood, or "because mom & dad told you so". I feel the same about any potential, romantic relationships in her life. I just want her to be safe, content, and happy. Her life; her choice.

@kiddosc: Well,, I would never be ugly to my child, or their partner & I'd never go so far as what @locavore_mama: went through! Ever! I mean there are going to be alot of things that we don't agree with our children doing & just b/c we don't agree doesn't mean we would do things to alienate them.

Perfect example: My mom did not support me marrying G's bio dad AT. ALL... she still took me dress shopping, got my hair/make up done the day of, was there for the celebration, was ALWAYS kind to G's dad (despite him being a down right horrible person most of the time), and once we were married she always counseled me in a way to help me better my marriage... never trying to get me to leave him (well aside from when he got abusive again then she counseled me to heal & get to where I could be safe). She supported me despite her disagreement.

I would be much of the same despite what I didn't agree with that my child was doing/choosing.

I will admit, that if my DD married a man who openly mocked Christianity at every opportunity (I know a ton of people like this) it would irk me no end. I cannot stand disrespectful people who are antagonistic just for the hell of it. I wouldn't try to come between them, but I would definitely let her know that her FI was a jerk.

I would have a problem with them marrying someone who changed their values. We hope to raise our child(ren) to be very accepting and loving and open-minded. I don't care who they pray to as long as they maintain those values. But, as others have said, I would have a problem if they met someone who converted them to a religion that required them to be what I would consider judgmental and hateful (i.e. opposing gay marriage, being politically pro-life, etc). I would still love them, but I would feel sad that their hearts were moved in that way.

Well my husband converted before we really talked about marriage. We are both Mormons and will raise our children in our religion. But when it comes down to it, they get to make their own decisions. I just hope that they find happiness. My parents always supported me even when I dated nonmembers and were never rude to anyone I dated. I'll show that same respect.

I think it would be difficult for me if LO decided to *convert* to a different religion (we are Christians) but I do realize that it is her decision to do as she believes. My DH was Catholic and he hasn't completely converted to Methodist but we both had the same overall beliefs. I think this would be difficult for me though if she wee to switch, it would be hard for me to handle although I will always support her no matter what.

@Glitter: I respect your faith, I do. To each their own, but would you really rather a faithful follower of God than a child devoid of major health complications and debilitating depression? I think I might be having trouble understanding; in that case, my sincere apologies.
