We're looking for a new house and one of our favorites has the master bedroom downstairs and all other bedrooms upstairs. LO is 8 months and sleeps 12 hours with one wake up (barring teething...)
Do you think this would be hard? Would you live in a house like that?
We're planning for more LO's in the future but could keep the crib in our room for a while.

I would use a video monitor and I think it would be fine (especially if future newborns were in your room for a while). I figure she naps upstairs while I'm down here and I do fine with the monitor. Hope your house-hunt goes well!

I currently live in a master downstairs all other bedrooms upstairs, and at first I was super worried about it but it has been fine. We kept DS in our room until he was 6 months old and sleeping through the night, but that didn't make too much of a difference. When my LOs cry we have to go up! Does it frequently wake me up enough that I can't go back to sleep, sometimes, but it isn't too bad. The only thing I hate about it that our bedroom is in the back of the house and the stairs are more centrally located, so if there was a fire or burglar I worry I couldn't get to them in time. But it isn't bad

That's our set up and I love it. LO was in our room for two months and now he's upstairs. It's great since he's on a different level for naps and sleeping and we don't have to be so quiet.

I wouldn't rule a house out based only on that, but it wouldn't be ideal in the very beginning. If you hated being on a different floor, could you make one of the upstairs room the 'master' until LOs were a bit older? We looked at some condos that were like that and I figured we could all stay on one floor for the first year or whatever and then move to the real master when I felt more comfortable.

When DH hurt his foot we slept in the guest room, which is on the main floor. As long as the monitor is there, i don't think it is a big deal.

We've considered houses that are layed out that way but didnt end up with one. We figured, it's more privacy for us. But my son wakes up sometimes at night so having to climb up and down stairs might get annoying.

Thanks for the opinions! We've got our search narrowed to two and the one with the 2 floor set up is nicer in general, just have to decide if I can handle that. There is another bedroom upstairs that could serve as the master if it was too hard. Checking out the other thread now.

Master down, kids up. Yes! But not the other way if the bedrooms were split on different floors.

We love master down houses. We really want a ranch, but we'd take a master down house instead, if everything else was good with it.

This is our house! Our master bedroom is downstairs and the other two bedrooms are upstairs. We like it.

This kind of house set up would not have worked with our son and his sleeping habits. I like everyone near each other...I commute enough as it is to not want to do it in the middle of the night!

This was a deal-breaker for me, actually. We do have a bedroom on the first floor but use it as a playroom. I like the privacy of master up and proximity to sleeping LO(s). Between extra insulation and white noise, we don't have to be super quiet.

When we were recently looking at houses, one that we were considering had the same setup. My stipulation was I HAD to have a video monitor if we decided to go with the house(we didn't)

Ours is the opposite, master up. We still have lo in our room at 6 months and go downstairs for all changes, but he sttn so it's not that bad. I was really worried about it, but it's better than I thought it would be. We will see how it works for the toddler years.

Ours is master upstairs, bedrooms down. And LO still cosleeps with me, and takes some naps in his crib in his room. I got a video monitor after just being too anxious having him sleep there on his own! I'm a bit of a worrier...

I wouldn't mind the master down and the babies up. When the LOs aren't so little anymore, they will have a tougher time sneaking out at night with mom and dad downstairs!
