Did anyone buy larger sizes of "regular" clothes rather than buy maternity clothes? Specifically with pants. I'm having the hardest time finding cute maternity pants to buy for work, but my regular pants are getting a tad bit snug in the waist! I'm wondering if it would be easier to just buy one size up in pants. but is that silly? Will I grow out of them in like another month or so (I'm about 16 wks)?

I tried bigger sizes but they ended up looking frumpy and I'll fitting. The waist would fit but everything else would be large and saggy. It was especially saggy in the bum.

I bought a couple pair of (super low rise) jeans in larger sizes. I would have considered the same for work pants, too. I figured even if I outgrew them quickly during pregnancy, I could use them post-partum to help with the transition back into regular clothes.

I grew out of dress maternity clothes that were in "my size" by 25 weeks. I moved up from a medium to a large in maternity. I did end up buying a size large maxi dress that fits great right now at 35 weeks. I bet it would have fit great during the whole pregnancy, as well! Can you wear dresses with a sweater over them?

@mediagirl: It's been pretty chilly here in NYC! I've been trying to hold out in the hopes that I'd be able to get away with skirts and dresses, but it's stayed in the 50s for weeks, so I need some pants or else I get cold!
@Oceanis723: Yeah, that's definitely possible...I would have to try them on, especially since only my waist is growing--thighs and butt are the same! -
I bought some bigger shirts, but pants were all maternity. They're so much more comfy.

I think it depends on how/where you are gaining weight. If you are gaining weight in your legs/thighs/butt it might work to buy larger regular pants sizes, if not; I think the pants wouldn’t fit very well.
If you want to wear dresses, they have great maternity leggings. I got mine at A Pea in the Pod and have been wearing from them from week 16 to now (almost 36 weeks). They are super comfy and keep me warm. I found dresses to be way more comfortable to wear than pants (even maternity pants).

did you try a bella band or be band to wear over your unbuttoned pants? i got one because i still like to wear my favorite jeans, they were just unbuttoned, but now it's getting to unbutton & unzip! yikes - but the band works if you can wear a longer top over it... i just had to be careful the zipper wasn't sticking out! i find it works for some things, but I just gave in & bought maternity jeans this weekend.

I have switched to maternity clothes, I did borrow a couple pairs of bigger jeans and pants from my sister, but they just felt frumpy instead of cute. What about dresses/skirts, or is your office not that dressy? Those seem to be a lot cuter on me than pants!

@hellobeeboston: I haven't, because my jeans are still somewhat okay...it's really just my work pants, which have a weird sort of button front part, so I don't know if the bella band would work on them? Maybe I'll pick one up as well, just to try it.

@YourSilverLining: I totally agree regarding the pants versus dresses/skirts and comfort. I rarely wear pants anymore (unless they are jammies or workout pants), and have exclusively worn skirts and dresses to work.

Ditto on the pants. The larger sized pants were just not going to fit my new shape. At 28 weeks I'm just starting to be too large for larger sized shirts, though.

My MIL graciously gifted me with an entire new maternity wardrobe when I was 7 weeks along. I'm so thankful! I love all of the pants I got and have been wearing them exclusively ever since. The tops, however, are still too big. And my pre-pregnancy tops are almost all too small, so I'm really struggling to dress my top half right now. I may go pick up a few in-between tops so I have something to wear that is comfortable and not too big/skin tight.

@hilsy85: Oh no, well leggings and tights are always great for colder weather too! I have to wear skirts/dresses for work and these keep me warm(er) in the winter months! and boots

@hilsy85: I've been surviving the cold start to spring in NYC with the bella band! I swear by it. Even on work pants that to have a funny clasp (button inside, and then clasp), the bella band just smooths it out. I still try to wear baggier shirts that cover it though. I thought of doing the whole one size up thing, but i just haven't gained the weight in my butt or thighs (yet!), so they will just look like they don't fit. I tried on a few pairs of maternity pants in my current size and you couldn't even tell they were maternity!

I bought one pair of jeans in a larger size pretty early in my pregnancy, and I wore them until about 20 weeks? For work pants I used the bella band with some old "fat pants" until the same point.

@hilsy85: I only bought one pair of maternity jeans (I found a pretty flattering pair at Motherhood Maternity) and pretty much everything else I just wore a size up. I basically lived in these skinny jeans (well, I am still living in them at 39 weeks) that were 2 sizes larger than my usual size pre-preg. It's helpful if they're low-rise and you can just wear them below your bump.
I also did the same with tops. I couldn't find a lot of maternity tops in my style that I really liked, but I was able to find some shirts that fit properly in a size or two larger.
Have you checked out H&M Maternity? I think Anne Taylor also has maternity clothes sometimes... (online).

I bought two pairs of pants one or two sizes up from my regular size & wore those most of the pregnancy but I also had maternity pants.

I did and they just got really uncomfortable. A girlfriend had warned me they would and I wish I'd listened to her!
The Gap has sales very frequently, I was able to build a large wardrobe on a budget by shopping their sales.

Have you tried looping a hairband through the buttonhole and then over the button? It gives you an extra inch or so of roominess.

I think everyone's different-- Personally I absolutely love maternity pants with a full panel, all BUT jeans. I have not been able to find a good pair of jeans I can wear during pregnancy and I've tried a LOT... from cheapest (Old Navy) to most expensive (designer brands at Pea in the Pod). I have a flat butt and no defined hips, so there's nothing to really keep the jeans up and the crotch ends up at my knees after an hour or so. I can't stand jeans that fit under the belly because I'm really sensitive around there-- between the baby pressing down and my bladder being right there, I just can't have a waistband there too!
So frustrating. I'm very happy leggings are back in style... I've been pretty much living in them this time around!

I didn't always weat maternity shirts, but I did get pants. I got mine at old navy and Kohl's.

I wore lots of dresses. The rubber band trick didn't work for me, the bella bands made me hot and I didn't want to invest in too many pairs of nice dress pants. I had two pairs of jeans, both from the GAP, but tons of dresses.

I am short an petite and could wear long flory tops in a size up until only 20 wks. I was happy that ingot a few of those types of tops bc can wear post baby too! The Bella band's useful life for me ended after 16 wks or so and from then on I neededthe maternity pants. I would say that it's probably a good idea to get a few pairs of maternity pants (I like gap) because you could easily outgrow the size up pants....case in point, I have outgrown my maternity pants at 37 wks (and I've gained 26 lbs which is completely normal...)

Yay, I just checked GAP again, and the pants I wanted are FINALLY available in my size! So I might bite the bullet and get some maternity pants

@hilsy85: I got my regular size... and weirdly enough, even though I'm a size 10-12 in regular jeans from Gap and places like that, I wear a size small in motherhood jeans. I think it's because their jeans are super stretchy.

@hilsy85: I got my "regular" size - I'm normally a 2P and I got 2A at the gap. They were a smidge big until like 20 weeks but, um, with 3 weeks left to go they are too small! BUT when I gain weight, I gain it in my butt and thighs.

I have done this... mostly because after my last pregnancy/miscarriage I'm already about 10 lbs over where I started from! I just ordered some maternity stuff today though... I do think it's more flattering!
They have a lot of cute stuff online! I just am impatient when it comes to ordering stuff online-- I want it right away!
