my 3 yrs old learned something new over christmas, that mean girls exist at every age. she wanted to play with her cousins who are older by a year or two. the two girls just ignored her and ran away whenever she got close to them. she shrugged it off but would occassionally say they don't want to play with her. i just feel so sad to see it at such a young age. what can parents do?

Oh that would be so hard to see! I think it's the parents responsibility to teach their children (especially for family) to play with all kids around & not leave anyone else. Luckily she wasn't affected by it and shrugged it off.

Where were their parents? Because that behavior really shouldn't be tolerated and the parents should have said something.
If it is close friends, I will say something to the kid. We have one who is a bit too posessive of toys and takes them from the little kids. I usually just tell him he needs to find a toy for the little kids before taking the other toy.
If it was the park or something, I would distract and hope they aren't their nexttime. If it is a regular I would change the time I go to the park.

If it were my kid that was being ignored, I would feel sad but I wouldn't be too concerned about it yet. I would think that a 5-year old (kindergartener?) would deem a 3-year old to be a "baby" and not want to play with her. I worry when like-aged children do it to each other.

Kids can be so mean
I guess the right thing is to just teach her that things like that are not nice, and she shouldn't do them. I'm not sure how much she will grasp, but to bring her up better than that, is a good start. I know all kids will act in such a way sometimes, but you can teach them the right way.
