My husband is obsessed with the price of baby items. Can I just say, we are not destitute. We have two full time incomes coming into our household, no crippling debt, own our own home... we're doing okay. And I agree with him generally - I know people who have spent ridiculous amounts of money on nursery furniture and clothes and it's just not necessary, I get it. His argument is that the "baby industry" insists that we need to buy the best x,y,z from the most expensive ranges and if we don't we are bad parents - when in actual fact, you can do it much cheaper and still love and meet the needs of your baby.
We are getting huge amounts of hand me downs - clothes, swing, moses basket, bedding - and my mum is buying our cot as a gift, my MIL is making all of our blankets, lovveys etc. I mean, it would have been a real pleasure to choose my own stuff (I linger in shops, looking longingly).... but hey, I'm really grateful. All we need to buy, really, are the practical essentials.
So, my husband has become positively obsessed with muslin cloths. He has looked on every website and in every shop in the city, noting the price of said cloths. He is outraged that, even in multipacks, even on Ebay, the cheapest he has seen them for is just over £1 per cloth. He is positive that the "baby industry" is telling us that we need muslin cloths and charging us over the odds for them.....
...... so imagine his triumph when he discovered 35p Ikea tea towels. They're thin, 100% cotton (just like muslin apparently) although they're not soft and look, basically, like TEA TOWELS! Sigh.
It's fine. They're for mopping up sick, anyway. I can mop up sick with tea towels. But it's not the point. If I want to buy a packet of muslin cloths I should be able to!!!! We're talking £10. Jeez.
I guess this is just a rant.....! It's quite funny, I do see that. But still - HUMPH!!!! Guess I'm not going to get my A+A muslin swaddle blankets then....?!!
