My MIL just wrote me and told me she is thinking about getting B a star as his christmas gift. I don't even know what to think.. He's 18 months old. If he was into astronomy, I'd get it but it seems like a waste for an 18 month old. I had suggested duplos or even contribution to 529 plan... ughhhhh

Yeah, that seems strange. What a waste of money! Contributing to a 529 sounds much more useful to me if she doesn't want to get a toy or something more tangible. A star is a ridiculous waste of money at that age.

At least it won't take up too much space, lol. He might really appreciate it when he's older.

It's sweet, and he'll appreciate the gesture later. I think you should just graciously accept. It's a gift, it's her choice. There are much worse things to get.

@Dandelion: If he was older or very young I'd get it.. but at 18 months there are so many things he is into that are fun to buy... and if she doesn't want a toy, contributing to college is a better use of money...

It's not your decision what she should get him as a gift-- you already made your suggestions, so like @Arden: said, just be gracious and accept it. I agree that those star gifts are lame/waste of money, but don't tell your MIL that!

@littlek: I don't get wby people even ask for suggestions if they don't plan on using the suggestions (or even using the suggestions as a guideline!).

Maybe you should let her know that the whole star buying thing is a scam, and that you would feel badly about her wasting her money like that on it.

@MsLipGloss: That's what I was thinking! Why did she ask me if she was going to go her own way.. and then she wrote me today mentioning the star. I think if she wants to get him a star, do it, but why look for my approval or disapproval? I'm going to say thank you and be grateful for any gift...

I hate to say it, but I'd bite my tongue on it as well. Just accept and be nice about it. I have to bit my tongue on all of the things MIL does in relation to gifts and LO. I still roll my eyes at them creating a savings account for LO not a 529 plan for him. It doesn't sit with me well for long term savings. Then, I remember that it's typical of her approach to life and have to let it go.

@cascademom: You rolled your eyes because LO's grandparents were thoughtful and generous enough to set up a savings plan, only because it wasn't the specific type you preferred? I think that is a bit harsh.
@littlek: I'm glad that you'll accept the gift regardless... hopefully MIL changes her mind since she admitted herself that it was a waste of money!

@MsLipGloss: @HabesBabe Whoa, I go to eat and this pops up. There's a lot of back story. Yes, it's a thoughtful gesture, but a little too easy for inlaws to take from it without our knowledge, etc. My MIL is not known for being smart with investments, etc., so having it be a savings account that DH and I can't even access is unsettling. I have no idea if there's money in there or if she's blowing smoke.

I agree that it is a sweet gesture. It is a unique gift and at least it won't be hanging out at the bottom of the toy box next year. When he is a bit older, it'll be neat to point up to the sky and tell him one of the stars belongs to him, even if he can't technically "own" it.
