What would you do if your MIL told your DH she wanted to take a week off to come keep your baby after you went back to work but you don't trust her at all. I don't trust her judgement or her to respect our parenting wishes. My mom will be keeping him so I know she is just jealous but I will never trust her alone with LO and also don't want her staying a week with us. 2 nights is my max with her !

Oh, that is a rough one. Could you say that going back to work is going to be a huge transition and you want to be able to have a "regular" at home schedule with your family? Make it about you not about her?

I would just say you appreciate the offer but you feel it's in the baby's best interest to get into his normal routine right away.

I'd thank her, but respectfully decline! I understand completely because my MIL is the same way. She has no respect for my parenting skills and thinks since she had babies 30 years ago, that she knows best. She'd never keep my child alone until my daughter can talk and tell me what is going on and even then, it might not happen!

I would decline right now but let her know that when LO is older maybe you can talk about it.

@MamaMoose: that is exactly what I was going to say!! Just tell her you want to establish his 'normal' right away when you return to work and you can 'revisit' the idea of her giving your mom a week off at a later date

I would just say no, but let DH deal with breaking the news. You don't have to be apologetic about not leaving your LO with someone you don't trust.

This is the situation with MIL and my SILs kids... SIL and her Husband won't let her look after my nieces alone. I kinda feel sorry for her, but I might do the same if I'm honest

I completely understand your situation. My mother will nanny our LO when I go back to work. DH's mom is an unmedicated bipolar and we do not trust her at all. So, we have agreed that under no circumstances will she EVER be around DS unsupervised.
I like the idea of saying that you want to get in a routine as quickly as possible. I think that having a logical, reasonable excuse will go over a lot better than being honest in this situation.

I think these suggestions are great. I wish I had a better relationship with her but honestly she is going to be 60 this year and sometimes I feel like my husband and I parent her instead of her being the parent. So frustrating. He will be home with the baby this summer so I may just suggest she come stay a day or two then to help him
I keep trying to make it clear she can't invite herself like this. When we want her to come we will invite her - its so awkward when she invites herself and then we have to say no
