I'm sorry if this is a ridiculously stupid question. I saw a thread just a few minutes ago about when milk came in... I was just at a birth class at our hospital and they were talking about skin-to-skin and trying to get LO to nurse pretty soon after birth. If LO is nursing just after birth, is that because my milk has come in or is LO nursing and getting the colostrum? Are they different? I kind of thought colostrum was milk? I'm sorry if this is a completely idiotic question (breastfeeding class isn't for another 3 weeks!)

I would say for most moms the LO would only be getting colostrum at that point. I have heard of some women's milk coming in rift after birth but i would say the majority take a we days. I took 5. Colostrum is thicker and darker. When the milk comes in YOU KNOW !

Baby will only be taking in colostrum straight after birth but this will be lining its gut and stomach with good bacteria and antibodies in preparation for breast milk. The suckling and constant nursing help prompt your body to start producing the milk and help establish milk supply.
I always think that colostrum is rich like butter and with their tiny wee tummies, a little goes a long way!

Colostrum is the super thick "pre-milk" it comes in teaspoons at a time normally. That's what baby is drinking until 2-5ish days PP when your ta-ta's explode. Then you KNOW there's milk in there.
