Misoprostol = Cytotec.. they use it all the time as a "ripening agent" before gynecological procedures that have to go through the cervical os. It was one of the most prescribed medications at the OB/GYN I worked at and I never heard of a single poor experience (except cramping which is expected). The internet is a scary place!

ETA: Assuming it works properly it will SIGNIFICANTLY help with pain during your procedure. I remember IUD insertions with/without cytotec being like night and day.

@WRKBRK: I was prescribed Misoprotol to "complete" my miscarriage about 3 weeks ago. It was an ok experience for me, it was just basically a bad period, though I was only at 6 weeks so that's partly why. Here's a couple thoughts:

- Make sure you know exactly what dosage the doctor wants you on, I'm hoping / thinking it will be 400-600mg?? I did 600mg orally, three days in a row. This might be helpful: http://www.misoprostol.org/File/guidelines.php

Most of the horror stories online are normally 800mg and they were for missed miscarriages, which is why there was so much cramping and bleeding.

- Misoprotol is in Pregnancy category X. You are not supposed to TTC for one month and/or one cycle afterward. This was clearly stated on my prescription insert.

@wrkbrk: she said to wait till I got AF after the miscarriage again, but didn't say it was because of the meds, but it probably wouldn't hurt to wait a cycle anyways, but I would ask your doctor. I would go along with the plans as laid out. I think if you skip taking it it could make the surgery difficult as it'll be harder to get last your cervix. But keep pressing them with questions. If there anyway you can call your doctor that is doing the iui next month to double check?
