DH just mentioned that my MIL and SIL are going to take K to the zoo for the first time on Thurs when they are watching her. I love the zoo so much, and I actually teared up thinking about missing it.
It's totally not a big deal- it's only the small local zoo, but I'm so sad about it! Have missing any 'firsts' made you sad?

I've been waiting for my lo to start walking (15 months) and now that she's taken a few steps here and there I'm totally choked thinking I might miss it!

it is a little bittersweet when i would pick LO up from daycare and they would mention something that he did for the first time. however it did not take away from the excitement when *i* shared things with LO for the first time.

Like @Smurfette: said, I think it is perfectly ok for you to tell them that you would rather be there for that. Missing some firsts is unavoidable, but for the controllable ones that are important to you, it's okay to say no!

@Mrs. Lion: @Smurfette: That's the thing I'm struggling with....I didn't even realize that it WAS important to me, until they mentioned it. I mean, I LOVE the zoo, but she's too little to really 'get' it, I think.

I had some non-negotiables! Zoo, library, pumpkin patch, swimming pool, first play date, etc. Other things still made me sad, but I understand I can't be with LO for everything. I demand a lot of photos/videos!

Yeah, that sucks. In a way you're so happy there's more people in their lives that love them and want to share things with them, and on the other hand you want them all to yourself. I think you can call dibs on first trip to the zoo if you want

So sorry! I missed my LO's first Halloween. DH took her to see his parents that weekend and his parents dressed her up and took her trick or treating at the local mall. I was crushed!

@Mrs. Oatmeal: i would tell them u want to take her. We took our lo to the small zoo on his 1st birthday and he loved it! It would have made me really sad having missed his reaction to the elephants and other animals he tripped out on. Like other ppl said i think they would understand.

I didn't mind missing milestones and such since there's no way to control when those happen but I haven't missed an event like the zoo. I also didnt feel comfortable with anyone aside from dh or I driving w LO Until well past his first bday. But that may just be me being neurotic. We actually made a huge event out of his first zoo trip cuz my brother was in town and we took both of our parents too
