I guess it depends on how much walking you do...

I took my 4 year old on a lot of all-day walking excursions and having her sit in a double with her 1 year old sister was essential. She's a great napper too, so having somewhere she could nap was huge! Some people say 4 year olds are too old for strollers, but it really depends on your needs. There were excursions where she refused to sit in it though too and just wanted to hold her aunt's hand everywhere... Fine! But on other days, I was grateful she still had a seat.

So, if you anticipate you need that, I'd have the older two in the double, and I would plan on babywearing the infant.

My first DD is 5 now and although we bring the double out sometimes, she's fine riding alongside on her balance bike too. We have a Mountain Buggy Duet and I think it accomodates a board or the free rider, for when #3 comes along, but I wouldn't go that route as I like that she gets cycling practice while we stroll.

My plan with three kids is for the double to primarily hold my younger two, and my older one is fine with walking a lot or riding on her bike. If she gets tired, I would babywear the infant and give her a seat. My middle DD still doesn't mind babywearing either (she's almost 2). I think because I wore her a lot while chasing after my eldest.

Oh and BTW, I have tried pushing a UB Vista with two kids in it with a rumble and a 3rd (a preschool friend) on the piggy back board... It's heavy and cumbersome and not ideal... It's great they market it as a stroller that can hold three kids... But I wouldn't do it for long walks if I could avoid it. I prefer wearing the little one and pushing just two.
