Fused Labia?!?!?!?!
I didn't want to make that the title of the post, I can't even say it out loud 
At LOs 6-month appt. the Dr. told me that LO has fused labia and that it's common in baby girl's once mom's estrogen leaves the system and that it can last up until age 3! She said we don't need to do anything right now.

Haha. It does sound unpleasant, but the pediatrician assured me that it wasn't for LO. It's the um, inner region that is fused basically. I felt like a bad mom for not noticing.

I've never heard of this. Dr Google tells me it sorts itself out. O the things you learn

i had no idea that could happen! did they say it will unfuse itself or will it need to be corrected later? hope it is something that can fix itself, poor LO! glad it isn't bothersome for her though

@mrsjazz: I seriously think my LO has this too. She has had a rash lately and I've been very thoroughly wiping her and I thought it looked a bit "fused" but I decided not to worry about it because the pediatrician always checks her and hasnt mentioned anything about it

@Mrsbells: What I've read about it says that sometimes a rash or irritation can cause their bits (I can't type that word again) to become fused as a way to fight infection.
I don't even know how long LO has actually had this as we switched to a new pediatrician (same practice, different location) and this Dr. was way more thorough in her examination.

My cousin's daughter had this. I think she was around 3 when she had to have surgery cause her's had completely closed up. Now it is fine. So definitely keep an eye on it!

My little girl did have some bleeding her first week home. I was glad that I had read about it online because even my mom didn't know that could happen.

@Smurfette: AAAAH! Surgery scares me. Surgery on LOs bits?!?! No way. I will be calling the pediatrician again.

@mrsjazz: I know. Crazy. Her doctor first said something to her about it at the year appointment. But I guess her and her husband forgot to much to separate and put the cream on it when doing diaper changes. It was a quick surgery and she was back to herself within a day or two.

@mrsjazz: I've never heard of this. Is it something noticeable? Like if I was looking for it, would I recognize it as abnormal? Our ped. has never mentioned it.

@mrsjazz: my Lo has it. I don't think its something to worry about. Our pediatrician wasn't concerned, he just checks it at our appointments and he said it should just fix itself.

Ok this may be TMI, but I know about this because it happened to ME after giving birth! Apparently, occasionally it happens to women who tear on the labia and who have low estrogen levels (those who breastfeed do)- where you tore will actually attach itself to the other side as it heals. Talk about fun getting cut open right after the trauma of birth! It is more common to occur spontaneously in young girls and post menopausal women because of their low estrogen levels.
