We are doing good here. E and I are snuggling in bed this morning before his big brother gets up. E has been smiling and squealing up a storm lately. He has also discovered rolling over both ways! He has also recently found his feet.
We didn't really wait to take E out places but we baby wear. I would say if your concerned I would wait for two month shots. Glad to hear things are going well for you and your lo.

@MrsRcCar: glad to hear things are going well I have considered wearing her to avoid her being exposed to others so much, just worry about doing it during the summer and her overheating..

@littleredhairedgrl: I carry him in either an ergo or my ring sling. The ergo does make us both warm but he prefers it. The ring sling I prefer and it keeps us both cooler, he just doesn't like it as well.

Olive was born at 4 lbs 15 oz and didn't really get the hang of nursing until 2 months. I pumped until then so even if breastfeeding isn't working right now, it doesn't mean that it won't in a couple of weeks.

@littleredhairedgrl: Happy due date!
We've had a rough week with breathing issues. I'm hoping that she keeps getting bigger and stronger quickly so her lungs will get stronger.

@mrs. 64: sorry to hear about breathing troubles, hope they pass soon!

anyone have issues with their lo spitting up entire feeds? A is still getting breast milk from the bottle and averages 1-2 huge spit ups a day. we've tried slower flow nipples, different bottles, spacing out feeds more and still happens. she also is constantly straining to poo, but is pretty regular with #1s and 2s. it breaks my heart when this happens and i get hysterical too.. makes me feel like i'm failing

@littleredhairedgrl: I responded to your other thread but E is a happy spitty baby. The only time he isn't is if I eat dairy. He will completely spit up what I can only assume is the whole feeding. Have you tried elimatnating dairy or soy? I know that Dh, N, and myself can't really have dairy. N can't have it at all, so I am not surprised that E is having a hard time with it. Just remember you aren't failing! You are concerned for her health, perhaps chat with an LC in your area or her doctor.

hi ladies - trying to decide if I should take A to my girlfriend's house tomorrow. she has a 6 month old and there will be 2 other babies there. all have had their vaccines and none are sick. A has has her first round of 2month vaccines and I don't plan on having anyone hold her or anything. dr said it should be ok as long as no one is sick. just still a little nervous about bringing her, but I am going insane being alone and isolated.. thoughts?
pomegranate / 3845 posts
@littleredhairedgrl: I think it would be ok! Our dr said once we passed his due date, we could go out, but to be cautious about sick people and to make sure everyone washed their hands!
grapefruit / 4712 posts
@littleredhairedgrl: I would go! Make sure people understand your boundaries but go and enjoy!!!
pomelo / 5628 posts
@littleredhairedgrl: it's actually easier at that age. If probably keep her in a swing or carrier and not let her share toys.
persimmon / 1135 posts
ok thanks ladies!! I feel much better now about bringing her.

I've totally missed all of the recent stuff on this thread! We are very careful about exposing D to sickness, so when we would take him out at the beginning, he was always in the stroller covered by a blanket. In winter we pretty much kept him away from other babies, now that he's older and bigger, we are having a pretty normal summer (although he did get hand foot and mouth), but we will have a nanny again this year and will be very careful during the winter.
@littleredhairedgrl: Dylan would spit up whole feeds and it was so hard! He was on Prevacid for reflux for over a year. The worst was actually when we switched to pediasure, but he threw up sporadically over the first year.

How are you doing preemie mamas? LO will be having laser surgery on her eyes tomorrow for ROP. I was hoping we would be able to avoid more surgery, but alas. Anyone had this?
pomegranate / 3845 posts
@mrs. 64: hugs
We didn't experience ROP but I'll keep you and your LO in my prayers.
pomelo / 5628 posts
@mrs. 64: ugh! Bummer. We were super lucky and didn't need ROP surgery, but I hear it's pretty simple, right? How big is she now?
nectarine / 2936 posts
@Applesandbananas: Thanks!
@Mrs Green Grass: I don't think the surgery will be too bad but she had to go to the operating room and will be vented. We've worked sooo hard to get to 1 liter of high flow I don't want it to set her back. She's 3 lb 11 oz! So chunky!
grapefruit / 4712 posts
@mrs. 64: We never needed surgery but keeping your lo in our thoughts. Hope your lo gets to that high flow soon. Hooray for almost 4 pounds!!! Grow little one grow!!!

@MrsRcCar: it went well thanks!! nice to get out and finally be with some friends but was still super nervous the whole time.
@mrs. 64: thinking of you and hoping everything goes well with the surgery!
A is having major fits today for some reason.. it was as if every time it put the bottle even near her mouth she started to scream. she hadn't pooped in a while but then she did and still was screaming. tried nursing her but she got frustrated with that too and then it was as if even putting her in a seated position for feeds bothered her. and she's not usually a crier.. took her temp and was fine. so I don't know what's going on. I go to the dr for her second round of vaccines and will talk to her but boy is it hard when you can't figure out how to make them happy

@littleredhairedgrl: poor A. E has had a couple days like that. They are pretty trying. When E was like that is wore him and walked around all day. My legs were tired but it was worth it. Big hugs momma. Hope the doctor can clue you in.

@mrs. 64: that is totally the scariest part! For our surgery he was still vented and I remember how much I never wanted to see that machine again! I bet she'll get off quick.

@MrsRcCar: thanks! she was much better wih dh during the 3am feed. and took all 3 ounces with me this morning in less than 15 min.. maybe just an off day

@mrs. 64: good luck with the surgery! I always hated when DS2 had to be reintubated after getting off it

so took A to dr yesterday for more vaccines and weight check. she is now up to 8lbs and gaining about 1/2 an ounce each day and also grew 1 inch to 21 inches! we discussed her feeding issues lately and she thinks maybe A is having some reflux issues that are causing her to want to stop after only a little bit bc of maybe some discomfort. so we are now giving her Zantac and go back next week to go over how she did. I also got some different bottles to try bc I think the Advent Naturals aren't doing so well with reducing air so we are trying the Mam anti-colic. she fought me a lot this morning after taking 1.5 oz and wouldn't calm down but then I swaddles her and she got real sleepy and slowly took the remaining 1.5.
just hoping things get better and that she doesn't start associating feedings with pain or stress.. urgh.

@littleredhairedgrl: Just reading your update! I hope that the medicine is helping A. HOORAY on the weight gain tho! PS: We found the born free bottles best for N's gas issues.
E is doing well here. His 6 months old (5 months adjusted), everyone is hounding me on when I am going to start him on solids. He isn't sitting up well just yet. When we sit him up here ends up falling forward so as you can imagine the high chair isn't a great idea just yet. He just recently started to show interest in our plates and food. I am hoping soon to start solids but I am not too concerned at this point. He has his 6 month check up at 7:30am Monday morning unless I can get it changed, which I hope I can but I doubt it. I am really not sure what I was thinking about 7:30am.....
We did go to ENT to get his lip clipped which seems to have had a great impact on his feedings. He is able to nurse without so much air getting trapped and he nurse much more efficiently. I have always pretty much stopped getting clogged ducts.
Hope everyone is doing ok. This thread has been a little quiet lately.

wow! been quite a while since I've last been on HB -- been so busy with dealing with A's feeding issues and trying to get out a bit more.. Right now she has her good days and rough days, but she is now averaging about 2oz each feed with 8 feedings a day.
I was trying nursing every other feed but we had a week where she didn't gain any weight so I stopped that and went back to just the MAM anti-colic bottles and within 6 days after the no weight gain she was up 11oz!! It's just been so challenging dealing with her fighting the feeds at times - makes me so sad for her.
Hope everyone is doing well!

@littleredhairedgrl: so glad you found a solution (at least for the time being!).
We're good over here, can't believe DS2 will be 1 in two weeks!

@MrsRcCar: Glad E is doing well. Don't let other people tell you what he "should" be doing. You and your ped know best and he will get there when the time is right!
@littleredhairedgrl: I'm sorry that figuring out her feeds has been so frustrating. I've been waiting on pins and needles to start breastfeeding, but now that we are ready I'm so nervous!
@beaker: Wow, how exciting! Do you have any big birthday plans? I'm still loving your backpack project. What an awesome idea.

LO's surgery really set her back quite a bit. She was vented for 5 days and developed some kind of infection. It was a very low point for her, me, and DH. We have slooooowly been working our way back to where we were with feeds/respiratory over the last several weeks. This week she went to o2 off the wall for the first time! Woo hoo! She also has taken a few bottles and tonight we are going to try bf'ing. I'm so excited. We just "celebrated" 100 days in the NICU and her due date is Saturday. Clearly we are not going home for a while, but I'm so glad she is having a good week and making strides toward coming home.

@mrs. 64: good luck with breastfeeding! That was the best moment (aside from discharge!) it just felt normal after everything we went through in the nicu!

@mrs. 64: so glad to hear things are progressing for you little girl! and good luck with nursing tonight!!

@mrs. 64: good luck with bfing! I'm sorry for the setbacks but so happy she's regained the ground. Tell all the nurses when its your due date and they'll make a big fuss (or they should at least!)
Thanks, I'm proud of the backpack too! He is so stinking adorable wearing it. We're doing a combo party with him and DS1 since their birthdays are five days apart, nothing huge, I'm going to try to make those trendy chalkboard things though!

@mrs. 64: Good Luck with BFing. Let us know how it goes! That's an exciting step! I'm sorry the vent set her back, but it's good to hear she's doing better.
Today is day 41 in the NICU for us. E is on a nasal cannula, and they're thinking he can come off of it soon. He's getting tube feelings, and they are saying we probably won't try a bottle until 35 weeks adjusted. He's 33w 2d now. We might try before 35 if they think he can breathe, suck, and swallow all at once. We'll see. I'm a little worried because he doesn't show much interest in the paci.
blogger / pomegranate / 3044 posts
@Mrs.ThinMint: have they showed you some oral stimulation exercises you can do, to encourage him to use the paci?
apricot / 274 posts
@beaker: They haven't. That might be something I should ask about tomorrow though. I'm not sure if they've realized he's not sucking much. He sucked great when he was first born, but he's been slowly sucking less and less.
blogger / pomegranate / 3044 posts
@Mrs.ThinMint: I'm sure they'll show you, but you kind of draw the paci down his tounge (like pulling it out while pushing down on his tounge) which is supposed to trigger a reflex. If he's not into that, you can use your finger in a glove, stroke his tounge more. DS2 preferred fingers and we had to work to get him to use the paci.
Don't feel like you have to do any of that, just ideas! Good luck

@beaker: Thanks! I'm definitely open to suggestions! I'll ask his doctor about it tomorrow!
