DS is 20months and fixing to start a Mother's Day out program Tuesday. It will be for 3 hours two days a week. Up until this point I can count on one hand the number of times my child has been around another toddler. He's behind in a lot of his milestones, but not enough to qualify for EI services. At this point I'm wondering if most of this is just due to his lack of socialization. I guess I'm just looking for some insight to wether anybody else put thier child in a program like this and saw improvement? I guess I'm starting to get anxious lol this child has been attached to my hip FOREVER lol. Make me feel better.

My kids both started day care at 16 weeks so I can't speak to the later socialization but I can say that both my kids tend to have big developmental leaps when they move up to the next room at school and are surrounded by more advanced kids. So I definitely think you'll see some progress as he learns from other children. That being said, the first little while may be frustrating for him with the combination of being behind and being away from you for the first time. So give it time and trust that he'll get acclimated even if it's tough at first.

DS had no socialization with kids his age and actually did receive EI and has a IEP currently. He's in pre-school 3 times a week for 2 and half hours. I cannot tell you the amount of change I saw in him. He has a language disorder but just being around all his peers has tremendously expanded his vocabulary.

DS1 was 16 months when he started in a small in-home daycare. He was speech delayed because he was slow to talk to begin with, but then he had ear infections for 6 months straight. He did get tubes at 22 months, so that helped stop the infections, but he got delayed right at the critical juncture for speech development. He just missed the cut off for EI when we got him assessed at 2 years old, so we started him in a formal 2's program at a local preschool center. He's always been a bit introverted and we liked that the in-home was small and nurturing, but we went full time, 5 days a week, full steam ahead so that he could be around kids all day and learn to talk and express himself. The aftercare from 230pm-530pm is mixed ages from 2-5 years old, so he also gets to interact with the older children a few hours a day. We also worked closely with his teachers to find ways to really engage him verbally and its been a great experience Its been a year now and he is fully within normal range for speech and he's done amazing, we're so proud of him. He wasn't technically behind on other milestones, but we've seen a lot of improvement in fine motor skills, which he was a bit slower at, and he eats SO much better at daycare than at home.

I started my DS at 18 months and he's not verbal but he's s learning social cues and socialization. He's still it verbal but jibbers a lot.
Just be prepared for lots of crying. The best thing to do is hand him over and walk away. The first day, he had no idea what was going on and walked right in. The next couple of weeks, he was crying and clinging on for dear life even when we got out of the car. Just give them a kiss and walking away helps to adjustment

I feel like the best way to handle any transition is to prepare for the worst and then be surprised and delighted when it goes smoother than you thought!
My son wasn't in care until he was 2 and I will not lie, it was not an easy transition. He cried a lot and it was quite upsetting for everyone involved. We also did a very gradual transition, which I am not sure helped or hurt, but it was the decision and we followed it through.
