I had to pick LO up from daycare early yesterday because she had a fever.
Usually I sit her in a laundry basket in the tub so she won't slide around... however, halfway through I took her out so she could lay down and relax. She was sitting down when I went to reach for the shampoo. I still had one hand on her, but she slipped to the side and smashed her face aganst the tub... immediately there was blood everywhere and she was screaming... SO much blood. It was the scariest thing...I was shaking like crazy. I was fully prepared to call an ambulance or take her to the ER, but stopped within a few minutes and I got her to nurse... I saw a little blood on her tongue, so I figured that's where it was coming from. I decided not to go to the ER because she was tired and I thought it was okay. I alternated Tylenol and Motrin every 4 hrs.
However, she refused to nurse or take bottles the rest of the night and was up most of the time. She slept for awhile on my chest, but woke up for good around 3:30am. She whined and cried until around 9am when she finally took a bottle on pumped milk. She was pretty happy after that.
Her pediatrician did not have an appointment until 10:45am but on the phone at 7:30am said she was likely ok and would not need stiches or to go to the ER.
Well, the ped took one look at it and said she needed stiches. It was cut all the way through on the right side about 1/2 inch long. She called in another pediatrician who agreed. They told me she needed to go to the ER or an ENT immediately. They were very sweet and offered to call around for me... they got her into an ENT within 30 minutes. I pretty much cried the whole way there. (Thank you to @boiledpeanut who texted me w/ me while I was freaking out).
ENT said he'd have to put her under and it probably wasn't worth it because it had been >12 hrs, so he could only do a basting stitch?? Anyway, I am relieved that she didn't have to go under, but it's kinda freaking me out that her tongue is gaping open like that.
She only took one bottle this morning and hasn't taken any milk since... she won't nurse or take a bottle, sippy, anything now... but I did get her to eat part of a pedialite pop. Poor girl
Anyone experienced anything like this?
I feel so, so, terrible
the broken nose was much more painful and distracted me from the tongue. Glad she got some sleep and is eating a bit!
