Baby Cobi and I have thrush, we were prescribed a topical cream called gentian violet, which, as the name suggests, is violet in color. I have to apply it to my breasts and also put it in his mouth with a q-tip. The poor baby has a purple mouth!

@artbee: or purple markers lol
@mrs. wagon: we have to apply it with a q-tip once a day for 4 days, unless the infection isn't cleared up then we continue for 7. However, now I wonder how I'm supposed to know if it's cleared up when his tongue is purple?
I know, cute and sad! He was smiling and talking earlier and it was so cute...but sad!! lol

Awww, poor little guy! If only it was closer to Halloween. It would be small consolation, but at least you could use the cream as the basis for a zombie baby costume...

@mrbee: Well, I am. My mom is making me raw milk kefir to drink, so for the past two days the only thing available to me was lifeway kefir which I know isn't as beneficial as the full fat milk kefir, and it does have cane juice in it. But I also have some plain whole milk yogurt that I've been eating too. I need to pick up some acidopholus.
How would you give probiotics to babies?

@Minnie_Girl: lol I know! Except he's so dang cute, he keeps smiling through it - he'd be one happy zombie baby lol

@Coco Bee: I'm so so sorry to see that. How did you find out you had thrush?
@mrbee: How do you give probiotics to infants? The instructions say to mix with cold food or beverage but my LO only takes warm milk.

My LO was just diagnosed with thrush today. She's older, almost 10 months and it's the result of antibiotics she was on a few weeks ago. I really wanted to prevent this!
We will be starting meds just as soon as DH gets them from the pharmacy. It rots!

The pic is cute but sorry to hear about the thrush. How did you find out you and LO had thrush?
I also want to know how to give babies probiotics. I've been taking an acidophilus / Bifidus probiotic gelcap twice a day and I think the Bifidus goes through to LO via breastmill but acidophilus does not.

@BabyBoecksMom: @ElisaT: We went to the dr on Monday after he'd had a nursing strike all weekend.
@ElisaT: Well I'm pretty sure I had the yeast infection first so I would want it to clear up on me so that he doesn't continue getting it. His isn't nearly as bad as mine, just a few white spots in his mouth. I had two infected spots on the side of my breast.
I had no idea acidophilus isn't transferred through breastmilk!
@twodoghouse: Lol he is. My mom called him blueberry boy all day.
@MamaG: Oh what a bummer! Not fun. Will she be in gentian violet too?

@Coco Bee - no she's been prescribed Nystatin oral suspension for the thrush. Unfortunately he's also got a yeast infection as well. We also have Nystatin cream to use in her diaper.
The oral suspension apparently tastes good (she didn't fuss at all!). It's recommended that we use a syringe and put it in her cheeks. She's then supposed to hold it in her mouth and swish. I'm pretty sure that's going to be a difficult concept to teach at this age.

Oh my goodness I saw the pic before I read what you wrote. Hope you guys are feeling better soon! He's adorable.

@MamaG: ah okay, I read that was a common remedy too. I hope it works well! How long does she have to use it? For us it's applied once a day for 4 days. So thankfully not too long.

@Coco Bee: @BabyBoecksMom: @ElisaT: If you have powdered probiotics, I read an article by a doctor saying that you can dip your finger into a capsule and have your LO suck on your finger. Another article mentioned mixing it with water, and having your LO drink it.
That said, please do consult with your pediatrician on whether and how to give probiotics to your baby!

@mrbee: just found some information:
http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/childhood-illnesses/acidophilus
It seems you can take the acidophilus capsules, empty the powder into breastmilk/formula/water and give it to baby. Very interesting..

@Coco Bee We are on the Nystatin for 10 days, 4x per day. And from what I've read, it's not uncommon to have to go for a second round of treatment. Here's hoping we can get it done in 10 days.
Previously, her doctor has recommended Culturelle which I see Dr. Sears suggests in the link you posted as well. Our LO is older than yours, but they recommended we mix the powder in with her food at one meal a day.

@MamaG: oh 10 days is a long time! I'm so glad that the gentia violet is just a weekend thing for us. I mentally made note that we don't have anything planned this weekend so that he won't have to be seen by others. We were out to eat at a restaurant tonight and some guy gave me the most awful look when he saw my baby's face! I have no idea what he was thinking...

Awww, how traumatic for you guys! He is just adorable with that purple mouth though, thanks for posting the pic. I can't help but chuckle at his cuteness!
Glad you guys got it figured out quickly though!
