So this is sort of a spinoff from my post yesterday. We took my son in to be seen because he has a fever and keeps grabbing his penis and saying "ouchie". He's crying on and off and just miserable.

They did a urinalysis and figured out he has a UTI. He was put on antibiotics for 10 days. But, they also want to do an ultrasound and VCUG once he's finished his meds. It just seems a little excessive to do all those tests when it's his first time.

Anyone else have a SON who's had a UTI before? What was the outcome? Did you have to do further testing?

ETA- my son is intact.

My DD has had two UTIs at 7 weeks and then 6 months. We did an ultrasound after the first one (came back clear) and they recommended a VCUG after the 2nd. I decided not to do the VCUG because it is very invasive and I felt confident that DD got the second one because of horrible diarrhea she had with HFM. I could not keep her in a clean diaper at night for two days. She's now almost 3 and no more UTIs since then. So for us it was the right decision to pass on the VCUG.

That said, UTIs are much more common in girls than boys so that could be the reason they are suggesting that right away, and since kiddos can't let you know always if something is going on, a UTI can turn quickly into a kidney infection and do permanent damage.

Are they suggesting an ultrasound and then do VCUG? If that is the case I would see if maybe you could opt for the ultrasound first and then move on to the VCUG if needed. You just definitely don't want to miss a kidney issue if it is there because your DS is at risk for more UTIs. Definitely talk to your doctor about concerns with these tests.

My son has had 2 confirmed UTIs in 4 months. He already has kidney issues (on dialysis) and doesn't pee much, but they are suggesting a VCUG for him now. Not sure when as his nephrologist isn't convinced he really has a reflux issue. I would be surprised to get a VCUG after one UTI, but my son is at a higher risk anyway, so maybe that is why it took 2 before they suggested it for him.

I think it is standard to do a VCUG when a boy gets a UTI.

Eta sorry about your son feeling so crappy hope the antibiotics kick in fast!

We are in the same boat. My DS is 3.5 months old and was just diagnosed with a UTI. He also had a sonogram at the hospital which showed a very small amount of fluid in one of his kidneys. He's on day 6 of antibiotics and is just having poopsplosions all over the place as a lovely antibiotic side effect. He is also uncircumcised and is recovering from a virus (which did not cause any diarrhea) so I don't really know how this happened. Maybe slight dehydration from the virus started the uti? Idk. No advice - just commiseration!

@Mrs Spoon: glad to hear your kiddo didn't have any more issues. they suggested both, but we're in the "let's do one thing at a time" camp.

@MrsScallop: that's interesting that they've waited to suggest it until after 2 UTI's. makes me think that they're jumping the gun with my son.

@Lilbear: ugh, sucks doesn't it?! i'm so sorry you're going through this...i hope he gets better soon.

i have read that although it's uncommon for boys in general to get a UTI, it is more common in uncircumcised boys. either way, it doesn't make it easy. i'm wondering if it's just a fluke on our end (apparently it can happen after antibiotics- something about changing the flora- and we just finished a round for an ear infection. plus, we've been going to the pool a lot and he was sitting in a wet diaper for a bit-which was dumb on my part anyway- so who knows!)

@ustechie: I don't think it would be crazy to wait on the vcug on your point. All those risk factors plus he's not super young to be developing his first. I might do the same if I were you!

@ustechie: ugh it super sucks. We have to set up an appointment for the vcug next week when his course of antibiotics are completed. They're going straight for the vcug after his first UTI because he's so young (3.5 months) and this is unusual for a boy at such a young age. I'm constantly cycling between calm everything is gonna be okay to totally freaking out!

@Lilbear: we're scheduled for an ultrasound after his antibiotics. They wanted a VCUG also, but are ok with us just having the ultrasound first. Did your son have a fever? Mine does and it's terrible.

And I totally agree with you about ok one minute and freaking out the next. I'm scared they'll find something on the US...although I suppose in the grand scheme of things, this isn't as horrible as I'm making it out to be. Still sucks though!!

@ustechie: my son actually didn't have a fever - I think they caught it super early as a total fluke. We were in the ER, because he had a seizure, and part of their routine samples to collect was urine via catheter. He was getting over a virus at the time, but it caused a low fever of just 100 degrees 4 days prior that only lasted 24 hours. By the time we were in the ER, his cold was just residual congestion and no fever for a few days. Our VCUG is scheduled for next Friday. This week has totally blown goats.

@ustechie: when I'm calm, I realize the vcug is only going to rule out or confirm kidney reflux (that he would most likely outgrow, and isn't life threatening - especially if it is caught early and monitored.) Hopefully the test comes back negative for kidney reflux and this UTI is just really bad luck!

@ustechie: we just had the vcug done this morning and my son does not have kidney reflux!!! The procedure is fairly quick and simple, so if you have to do it in the future, it really wasn't too bad. I hope your son is feeling better!

@Lilbear: I was just thinking of you guys this morning! I'm so glad the VCUG went well and that your kiddo doesn't have reflux! You guys must be so relieved.

We're scheduled for our ultrasound next week, as well as a follow up Dr's visit, so I'm just hopeful everything will go well and we'll be able to put this behind us!

@ustechie: We are very relieved. Our pediatrician thinks that my son may have never even had a UTI and that it was a contaminated sample. Especially since he is so small still and he didn't have any sort of fever at the time. I think this test being negative kind of confirms his suspicions.

The ultrasound is really quick - like MAYBE 2 or 3 minutes long, so you have an easy appointment ahead of you! Good luck!
