Same with my mom, my brothers name is Nicholas- which I love! But she hates the nn Nick and always corrected people. But I understand, I think Nicholas is a beautiful name.

I wouldn't, but one of my friends named her son Henry and doesn't want anyone to call him Hank.

Actually, I've had a few people ask if we call our son by the common nickname for his full name. I always correct them. If we wanted to call him by a nickname, we would've introduced him that way; as it is, I always introduce him by his full name because that is what we call him.

I feel like it's harder with boy names; there are so many boy names I like, but I hardly ever like the nicknames.

Yes, because my husband only loves one name, and I have to just deal with it because the name itself is decent, I just hate the nickname.

Could be that her husband got more say in the name than she did, and so preventing others from calling LO "Ben" is as much control as she gets.

I'm considering Catherine of we have a girl but I will call her Catherine, not one of the many possible nicknames. I think you should always call someone by the name they are introduced by. Not just assume a nickname is being used.

I don't think I would.... but I did like the name Theodore for a boy and preferred the nn's Theo or Teddy but I don't care for the name Ted.
DS is a Benjamin and I loved the name Ben, Benji, Benny, Ben-jammin DD has a lot of possible nn's with Elizabeth but we'll introduce her as Elly.

No! As much as I love the name William, I would never name my child that bc people could call him so many names I don't like - Will, Bill, add a y to either of those, etc.

No. I've vetoed the name Andrew for that reason. I love the name Andrew, but don't like Andy. I don't mind Drew, really, but I've had friends with both of those names who died, and it would be too weird/hard to call our LO either name.

Well, you don't have a lot of control over nicknames once kids get to school, so this wasn't a consideration for us. We hardly ever call our son by his nickname, really just a shortened version of his first name.

We chose Theresa and the common nickname is Terry which we hate (sorry Terrys of the world!) so we've decided to call her Reese instead! Most people probably won't even realize that her names is Theresa.
@habesbabe: My bro & SIL named their son Henry and SIL HATED Hank but he was over 10lbs when he was born so we called him "Hank the Tank" behind her back.

My husband doesn't like the nicknames for Elizabeth, so we've crossed that off of our list! I would push to always keep it Elizabeth, but when they go to school that can all change! So we're compromising and using it as her middle name. It's my middle name as well, so I am happy

Probably not, but DH has a name that is almost always shortened, but he goes by the long version (Bradley/Brad). For the most part, no one really has a problem using the long version So for our kid, I think the same situation would probably go. A few select strangers might call the kid by the short name, but everyone who matters would use the name the person wanted.

Nope! I had to veto the name that I'd ALWAYS been planning on naming my future daughter. The name was Kathryn and my husband said he'd call her Kathy. I was all "WTF - that's not even a common nickname! Call her Kate instead!" And he was all "I hate the name Kate!" So Kathryn was out!

Plus it's the name of his cousin so it was out anyway, but the nickname issue really sealed the deal for us.
