Our part time (27 hours/wk) nanny has a birthday coming up. We really like her. What should I do for her birthday? A gift card? What amount?

She's mentioned needing new clothes but I'm not sure where she would like to shop. Maybe gap??

Any gift card, or even a cash bonus! As a former nanny I would have been thrilled with the gesture, regardless of the amount.

for an employees birthday, i probably wouldn't do more than a card and have LO scribble in it. But if i did get a gift card, i would put max of $50. I figure Christmas bonus/gift is more traditional and would do something more then.

My last family got me a card, flowers and a gift card to Old Navy (I think it was $50)

Ok I was thinking 50 on a gift card but didn't know if that's cheap!!!

We did a flowers and a $50 gift card to Sonic because she stops at Sonic every morning on her way to our house. If I didn't know her shopping habits/tastes I would go with Target or Amazon.

I think when I was a nanny the birthday gifts I was given were close to one days worth of pay. It was so sweet that they did anything!

$50 sounds good. Gap sounds great! Even if she doesn't like their clothes, they also have great accessories!!

@mediagirl: she is a jeans and button down / classic style and I feel like gap is so benign!

@winniebee: then it's perfect! Or..is she into outdoorsy stuff? Would she like a GC to the LL Bean outlet? Is that too far from you guys?
Edit - oh nevermind. That's super far away. lol

We usually do something small for birthday and then something nicer/bonus at Christmas. I've done a nice bouquet of flowers and cupcakes from a local bakery or an American Express gift card and a small gift (hand lotion or a scented candle- she likes candles), etc. But I think $50 is a good amount to spend!
ETA: and LO usually makes her a card which she always loves!

@mediagirl: she's very outdoorsy loves to camp and hike! That outlet is only 20 mins.

@winniebee: I'd do gift card for $50 for American Express. Otherwise you are tying her to a store.

$50 is more than generous. You're not being cheap. $100+ gifts are usually reserved for my spouse or immediate family and to me seems rather excessive for a part-time nanny.
If she's outdoorsy, REI or Patagonia might be nice for gear or clothing. And they both have outlets and online stores. Otherwise, perhaps a fun restaurant or specialty market?

@youboots: $200 gift card for a PT job? Dang, are you hiring?
I would give $50 tops. Probably to her favorite restaurant, or salon, if she has gone. I also like the Amex gift cards because they can be used anywhere. Or an Amazon gc.

I bought ours a cubano sandwich, a cupcake, a card, and let her leave an hour early. She loved it.

50 is highly generous...especially since you haven't had her for long

Our nanny's birthday is on Christmas but she'd only been with us for 3 weeks at that point. I did a combined birthday/Christmas gift and gave her $100 cash, a $25 starbucks gift card, a starbucks travel mug, and some tea I knew she liked (saw the bags in my trash can - I'm a little creepy). Anyway, I think $50 gift card or cash is fine, and maybe a smaller token item (mug with her initial?) or a cupcake or something.

i think we did $100 gift card to macys the first year (full-time nanny). i love the idea of letting her leave a little early on her birthday!

$50 is more then generous, especially concerning she is a new nanny.
@youboots: I don't even spend that much on DH/LO/family bdays!

Well I guess I'm in the minority. Thanks for pointing that out. I should say, if you can afford it spoil her, since the op mentioned they really like her. I was a nanny and my family treated me really well. I still remember their kindness and that was almost 10 years ago.

In the past I have received nice gifts from employers; a scarf from a cute local boutique, homemade goodies, gift cards, etc. I think $50 is perfect. If you don't know what store to get it, maybe a visa giftcard or cash instead so she can spend it anywhere?

@youboots: I do agree with you that as a former live-in FT nanny, I remember so much how well the family treated me! In the smallest ways though, like buying me some of my favorite foods while they were grocery shopping, or letting me have certain days off when I asked far enough in advance, letting me fly my friends out to stay/visit me and giving me an extra day off for that, etc. I don't think thoughtful/kindness extends only to monetary amounts (I'm not saying you were saying that, but I think that's why people though $200 seemed like a lot).
