How much vacation time should I offer my new nanny? We are hiring her for eight months. I am thinking to prorate 75% of either two or three weeks per year. Is that too little or just enough?
I just want to know if there is a common or typical amount that is expected. Same with a sick policy actually.

I voted two but I think another piece to think about is whether you are asking for any of it to overlap with your own vacation or holidays, or if it is truly free time off when you would need backup care. We had a part time (3 days/wk) nanny for 6 months - I did not offer paid vacation of her choice, but I did pay her every week if we chose not to use her or it was a holiday (so she ended up with around 3 weeks of paid days off since it included Nov-Dec, but it wasn't her choice when she got them). I think you can flex it to your and the nanny's needs if everyone can agree on the terms in the contract!

where i live its 2 weeks (1 week of her choosing, one week of the family's choosing) plus anywhere from 1-5 extra vacation or personal days. And anywhere from 1-5 sick days. Or you could lump them together and just call them PTO to use as she pleases and not call those additional days sick or vacation (with notice, of course)

I've heard 3 weeks--the week between Christmas and New Years, a week of your choice, and a week of theirs. For 8 months I'd do a week of your choice paid and up to 3 unpaid days.

Will she be full time or part time? We have ours two days/week and give her paid holidays and also any days we take off (so if we take vacation we pay her). She doesn't have specific vacation or sick time though.

@bushelandapeck: 4 days/week. I think based on these comments i will be ok giving 2 weeks. It comes out to 6 days in 8 months (75% of 8 days and 8 days is 2 weeks at 4 days/week). so I was worried it was too little. But that's not counting any of my own vacation days that don't overlap and paid holidays that she will have off paid.

@SweetiePie: yes! I've been so happy and relieved since I made the decision, offered and she accepted :). Just need to get through the unpleasant part of letting the current one go which we will do at the end of this week.
