In the potty training book we're using (Oh Crap, Potty Training), they tell us to wake up the kids overnight and have them pee... then eventually they will start holding it for longer periods and then all through the night.

C has been daytime trained for months now, but I am not looking forward to this phase, so we're still waiting it out. But she wakes up after EVERY nap and every night with a full diaper!

You can't nap or night train, it's something that they will do when they are ready. Basically, the behavior that you are looking for is that they wake when they need to use the bathroom, and it happens when their body is ready.

@DillonLion: that's tough. I don't like how some schools push stuff like that.

@HabesBabe: We used the Oh Crap! method and didn't wake overnight. He was past the 3 year mark when we trained, but was still peeing often during naps and overnight. But shortly after we trained he started actually waking up at night if he peed and wanted to be changed. He would sleep right through it before he was trained. I just decided that leaving the diaper on might be confusing his muscle memory and started leaving them off for naps (still in the no underwear phase). He stayed dry immediately. So after a week or so, we started leaving them off for bed. And lo and behold, he stopped peeing at night. I think the diaper was telling him he was still allowed to go, so he was. He's yet to wake up at night to go and it's been a few months now. Not sure how old your LO is, but it might not be as bad as you think!

We transitioned out of the nap diaper after a couple of months. It was really accomplished by making sure she used the restroom after eating/before nap. And making sure she went to the restroom IMMEDIATELY after waking up. The overnight diaper took a lot longer to get rid of.

That being said, I was pregnant during this process and really didn't want to be dealing with changing sheets in the middle of the night.

I just waited til she was dry overnight for a long time ( 2 months?) before switching to undies. She had one accident but has been dry over night for over a year.
