I'm curious what your day looks/ed like nap wise with your 5 month old? As well what time approximately bed time is/was?

My daughter didn't have a nap schedule until she was much older. At 5 months she took a series of 30-minute naps throughout the day -- as many as 4-5 -- depending on the day. Bedtime was (and still is) at 7:30.

@skibobrown: thanks!! My LO is still doing well with going down every 2 hours - was just curious if this is 'par for the course!' I'm wondering if I should try and move up his bedtime a bit though...it's currently between 9-9:30 (depending on when his last nap was) but he's really been fighting going down just after turning 4 months. Naps are a breeze right now. I nurse him, put him down drowsy and he's able to fall asleep, yet at bedtime it's a nightmare! Any suggestions?

Hmm at 5 months I think LO was going down for his first nap about an hour after he woke up, and then for his 2nd and 3rd nap after about 90 minutes of awake time. He was a chronic cat napper at that age though--they were usually 40 minutes on the dot, so sometimes he got 4 naps. He was waking up around 630 and going to bed between 6 and 630.
when is he waking up for the day? how is his overnight sleep? At 5 months we were also in the thick of an awful sleep regression so his sleep was generally pretty bad! It got much better when we sleep trained at 6.5 months but we toughed it out for a month and a half.

At 5 months, she was already down to 2 naps, but she went to bed really early. She would nap from 9-10 and 12-3 and then sleep at 5:30 for the night. We also had a sleep regression so she was waking up 2x a night, but it wasn't terrible. It lasted a few weeks.

I think LO is not the norm, but it works for us so I'm not complaining! She'll be 5 mos next week and she wakes up between 6 and 7, then she takes a good long nap from 9:30 or 10 until 12:30 or 1. Then she's awake for most of the afternoon, maybe taking a shorter nap around 4 or 5. Then she's up until bedtime, which is around 9.

LO's schedule is very similar to what it is now at 8.5 months:
Wake up at 7am
Nap 8:30-10ish
Nap 12:30-2ish
Nap 3:30-4:15ish
Bed at 8
The only real difference now is that his 3rd nap has shifted later!

DS will be 5 months in a week and a half, and just this last week his naps have been getting longer (2 hours vs the 45 min ones)... so his naps kind of look like this right now...
6:30 am - wake up
8:30-10:30 am - nap #1
1 - 3 pm - nap #2
5-5:30 pm - catnap
8 pm - sleep

@hilsy85: thanks! He usually cat naps too, although the last three days I have got a few 1.5'ers out of him. Maybe he's onto something! He is awake for the day between 8-8:30. I feel like we're probably in a bit of a sleep regression too...for 2 months straight he only woke twice to nurse. Now it could only be once or 5 times! We co-bed though so that probably skews things a bit.
@Andrea: Holy smokes! 5:30...the things you could get done in the evening! Did she figure out that time herself?
Wow @JerricaBenton: that's pretty good! How many wake ups (if any) does she typically have?
@Beehive: @Mrs. High Heels: that's pretty much the length between naps he's doing - approx every 2 hours. Do you think if I was to start waking him a bit earlier he would naturally shift to an earlier bedtime?
He currently has a hard time staying asleep at nighttime after I put him down...it usually takes 2 or 3 times until success. I'm not sure if its my fault because we co-bed or because I nurse to sleep? I don't want to be making bad sleep habits yet on the other hand I'm not ready to move him to his own bed. Generally I find we all get better sleep this way...its just so easy! (Never ONCE thought I would be co-bedding, totally ate my words on this one!) Need to have some more time to myself or with DH at night though so would love to have him down successfully by 9.

LO is about to be 6 mo (when did that happen?!?!) and her naps are a bit all over. Bathtime is 8:30pm and she goes down shortly after. Naps during the day tend to be about every 2-3 hours. We try to follow her sleep cues. I'm thinking of trying to get her on some kind of schedule, though,

@lolabee: I also have a 3 year old to put to bed right after, but she is asleep by 6:30/7 so I still have my nights free! Lots of cooking and cleaning to do, but I can't complain. And yes, she was basically dying of sleepiness by 5:30. Now she is 6.5 months and starting to push her bedtime back so she'll probably start sleeping around 6:30, too, like her big sis.

@BlueWolverine: No kidding!! It goes way too fast! I was reading somewhere that in general, up to end of 6 months that still seems to be the 'awake time.' Do you wake your LO in the am or does she wake herself?
@Andrea: Interesting! Guess my guy is really a night owl. Goes to show how different each babe actually is. Was your 3 year old similar?

@lolabee: she generally sleeps through the night - every once in a while she wakes up early, like 5, but then I feed her and we go back to sleep for a few more hours. She used to go to bed closer to 10 - 10:30 so we're trying to move it to 9 the past few weeks. We did deal with a sleep regression from 3.5 mos for about 4 weeks but she's back to normal now! She's a pretty great sleeper so I can't complain!

@JerricaBenton: That is wonderful! I am happy for you Do you put her down drowsy into her crib? What is your routine?
pomegranate / 3872 posts
@lolabee: we wind down in the evening but we still don't do a bath every night. Maybe a story but often just cuddling after we get her dressed for bed. Then I nurse her. When she's done she's very drowsy but not totally asleep. She's still sleeping in the pack n play in our room so we leave her alone in there for a bit, so we and the dog don't rouse her while she's falling asleep. Crib in her room is the next step! We're still mentally preparing lol.
I know you co-sleep, but maybe you could put him down somewhere alone so he can really fall asleep first. Even if we give her a half an hour, she's out by the time we come in so we can change, wash up etc. without waking her.

LO is 6 months, but her schedule is still the same as when she was 5 months. She typically wakes at 630am, naps from 9-940am, then again from 12-230pm, and one last one from 430-515pm. Bedtime is 730pm and she STTN.

@JerricaBenton: That's pretty much what we do as well. Bathe every other night. I had started nursing him in the rocking chair and putting him in his crib (he takes most naps in there) until first wake up. It was going pretty well until we went on a 4 night vacation and it all went to crap. We have another 4 night vacation in two weeks so I'm wondering if I should just wait until after that to start that approach again?! In a perfect world I would be pumped if he went down in his crib until first waking (if that was at LEAST 2 hours) then came into bed with us. I swear that he knows the difference between naps & nighttime as he goes down like a dream in the day.

@lolabee: yes, she went to bed at 5:30 for awhile, too! So I guess I have early birds. But that also means we never get to sleep past 7 am.

@lolabee: I hope it happens for you soon! Of course after talking about our nice sleep situation, LO kept us up all night last night kicking her legs against the mattress so loudly! Just goes to show it can all change in one day, haha

@lolabee: lol... well, we've established we have opposite kinds of sleepers! K took ONE whopping 25 min. nap all day yesterday. But, she is a monster night-time sleeper. We start bath/bedtime at 9 pm and she'll sleep at least 12 hours usually with 1 or 2 feedings (1st one is always after 6 hours). I know her long sleep is probably why she doesn't nap much. Maybe your LO doesn't need as much night sleep if he's napping a lot in the daytime?
Also, I'd wait until after your next trip to change any sleep patterns. Our trip messed up sleep for over a week while we were there, and then almost a week after we got back. And FWIW, K totally sleeps better (deeper and longer) than when we sleep even in the same room. We co-bedded on vacation and she was waking every 1 1/2-2 hours! As soon as she was back in her own room, she got longer stretches.
