I'm half-way through my first pregnancy, and the topic of sleep came up yesterday with my immediate family as we plan a trip for next summer. My baby will be 6-8 months old, and my nephew will be 2. My brother basically said I'm a fool for thinking that I can travel with a baby and get the baby to sleep in our carrier/in a stroller, and that I'll be chained to a hotel room or house rental our entire trip at that age. He and my SIL are absolute SLAVES to my nephew's naps-they drop everything and leave no matter where they are to ensure he is at home sleeping in his crib. My parents have a crib for my nephew to sleep at their house, and they refuse to let him sleep there:-/.
I realize I am not a parent yet, but I was a nanny for five different infants over the years, and have seen a wide variety of sleep patterns and sleep training styles. I announced it was a goal of ours to make sleep "happen" in places other than our crib. I then got a lecture about how detrimental it is for a baby to sleep anywhere other than his/her crib. Sigh. Obviously our child will be sleeping at home 95% of the time, but I wonder if I practice with stroller naps/carrier naps/putting him to sleep in friends cribs when we visit that it might set us up for success? What do you think?
we are always on the go. He sleeps in the ergo, car seat, stroller, in the recliner, in the middle of a bed, or on the floor on a blanket. He just doesn't sleep for long!
