We love going to Philadelphia - there's so much history but also lots of great restaurants and shopping. We also love Newport, RI for the same reasons.

DH & I had a wonderful getaway to Hilton Head, SC. We have also enjoyed other little towns on the coast in NC.

@petunia354 We went between Christmas & New Years last year. It was quiet and weather was great for walks/bike rides on the beach. I burn easily so I don't care about sunbathing! We did early bird dinners like old people & scored some awesome deals for great food!

ETA I always think of old people too!

We are huge fans of Maine, and Bar Harbor/Mount Desert Island/Acadia National Park in particular. Great hiking, amazing lobster and some great towns with lots of family oriented activities/restaurants.

We're fairly local but when were looking to get away we head to ocean city nj. It's a far cry from mtvs jersey shore. Very family friendly great restaurants beautiful beaches about an hour from Philly and 15 minutes to Atlantic city.

I also agree with DC. It could be a one or two day stopover if you are going further south. I find it to be pretty kid friendly too.

@hergreenapples: I was going to suggest Maine too. We mini-mooned at a little island inn in Casco Bay, off the coast of Portland. It was terrific, especially if you love seafood.

The Outer Banks holds a special place in our hearts. We got married there during that time of year. It's after the much busier summer months, but there are still a few people around in September/October. You also score much cheaper rates on house rentals at that time!

DC is also nice (we got engaged at some nearby botanical gradens) and I love all the places @hergreenapples: suggested in Maine!

Cape May NJ if you go while it's still warm enough! My favorite relaxing vacation spot up and down the east coast. It's so beautiful there.

@travellingbee: Another vote for Asheville! I'm hoping we can take a mini vacay there in the spring.

I am from Philly and also loooove DC, but if Charleston is an option, I vote for that! DH and I took a road trip there a few years ago and loved it! We stayed on the Isle of Palms, but went into Charleston to explore everyday. It's so beautiful and we loved looking at all the homes.
