We just found out that our neighbor had double bypass surgery yesterday. I'd like to take something over to him and his wife but am not sure what's appropriate. Usually I take baked goodies and a gift card for takeout. But I don't think I should be taking junkfood to someone who has heart issues. We have a good neighborly relationship but don't know him personally very well.
I'm thinking possibly an edible arrangement with a gift card to the grocery store? Any suggestions welcome!

Gift card to the grocery store is a great idea. He may have a specific diet prescribed to him by the doctors, so that will allow his family to buy what is recommended. The edible arrangements is great too. I assume just the fruits without chocolate would be most appropriate.

@MrsRoo: ditto what @madisonbee: said. When my husband had his heart attack, he was put on a heart healthy diet. If you want to take them something, a care package, a nice gesture would be a basket with heart healthy foods: nuts (almonds are great), apples (dried apples are a good option so they don't go bad), a bottle of olive oil, a container of hummus and a loaf of good, whole grain bread.

My MIL just had open heart surgery 3 weeks ago with a valve replacement and a double bypass. Her dietary restrictions were lower salt and sugar, but nothing too extreme. She has been enjoying shortbread cookies, tea, coffee, vitamin e lotion for her scars, and having people cook for her. And a glass of red wine some nights to help her relax and get those heart healthy benefits!

@MrsRoo: I had to do the same for a relative and there were so many diet restrictions that someone suggested fruit, so I just made a really nice fruit salad with their favorite fruits.
