What's your favorite Nerf gun or toy like a nerf gun? I know some people aren't into play guns but ... I like them... 
I mean, they're for my kid... So which one should we get?

Honestly any of them - we have tons at our house! Maybe start with one that only holds 4-6 darts since it will be lighter

My authoritative source tells me that the Nerf Retaliator is highly desirable. (I feel like Grandma may eventually cave to this request.)
Also, two important items: 1) make sure your child and everyone who plays with your child abides by the "no aiming anywhere in the vicinity of someone's head" rule, and 2) buy some sturdy sunglasses too (or be the mom who makes their kid wear safety goggles during Nerf play
) and make your child wear them, just in case.

@honeybear: great suggestions. We play with some friends (who have 3 boys and the Retaliator) and the boys have those rules (no shooting above the neck. If you hit a head, accident or not, you are out for 5 minutes). -
