My daughter is 3 years old and slept in a crib/toddler bed for the first 2.5 years. I have the crib mattress in storage now and the mattress will probably be 4 to 4.5 years old by the time a new resident will need it.
Can I use this mattress for a second LO or do mattresses have expiration dates (like a car seat)? I see that most Goodwills and CraigsList won't take used baby mattresses, so that is what prompted me to ask.

We used the same one for both kids.. it was three years old by the time my DS needed it.

I think it's fine to reuse. Our mattress was almost 3 years old when the baby arrived. It's a very firm mattress so it looks brand new. No wear and tear.

We got ours from my brother and it was about 5 years old. I knew where it came from though. We need to get another one for this LO though because A still needs hers.

My first thought about the Goodwill used mattress thing is that they don't want pee/poop/vomit/bed bugs issues. But since it's your own mattress, I would totally reuse it unless LO #1 jumped all over and made it lose shape. I intend to use ours for a future #2!

I think one of the things that has come up with SIDS prevention recently is that mattresses should be as firm as possible. I'm not sure how many years of use would make a mattress not as firm, though.

@littlecasita1122 That's what I was thinking. My daughter used it for 2.5 years and in that time frame, there was much jumping. Granted, she was maybe 20-25 lbs, but I'm wondering how to determine whether or not it's firm enough to use again.
It's just taking up space for now and I'd like to either get rid of it or just know that we will use it again. Hmmm.
