Is it normal to have a newborn BF for two hours plus? I never had enough milk for DD1 and she ended up losing a lot of weight the first 24 hours. DD2 is only 14 hours old and has been BFing for two hours. Do I just not have enough colostrum for her?!? Are we doomed already?

Nope! It's possible she's just helping you with your milk supply. My midwives told me that for the first 24 hours or so anyhow, babies only need a tiny bit of milk- she's probably just figuring out this whole nursing thing. Good luck and congratulations!

It's good for your supply! LO#1 did that, and was just a really nursey baby. LO#2 didn't, so I was always worried she was starving.

it would be VERY early for your milk to be in at this stage! Your little baby is just trying to build up a great supply! My midwives had me hand express colostrum in the first 48 hours and my son would honestly eat 2 or 3 cc's and be done. They hardly need anything at this age! Good luck

Not at all! It is totally normal not to have milk right away, my milk didn't come in for five days!!! Totally normal for babies to lose weight while waiting for the milk to come in. Please try to relax! Colostrum is not going to fill up their tummies so baby may be a bit grumpy but baby will not starve while waiting for your milk to come in (assuming baby is otherwise healthy without medical issues?) It makes sense that baby is on your boob all the time, hungry and waiting for milk to come in, and trying to fill up on colostrum. It's good for telling your body to hurry and get the milk on the way please! It's good for your supply too.

@MrsH: Try and get an LC to come and see you as soon as possible. How much is 11oz as a % of her birth weight? They may advise you not to let her nurse for a long time if she is not actively sucking because she may be burning lots of calories. You could also try hand expressing the colostrum to give her. It is good to put her to the breast often because it will signal your body to make milk, mine took 4 days to come in. Lots of skin to skin time is good too.

@MrsH: how heavy was your wee babe at birth and did you have any Iv fluids during labour? All babies lose weight in the first week or so after birth so don't panic just yet!
