When your milk came in did your newborn nurse for shorter times compared to when they were just getting colostrum ?
My LO nursing sessions have gotten a good bit shorter now that my milk is in but he isn't wanting to nurse more frequently. I guess the milk is filling him up more quickly ? Wish he would nurse a little longer to help with engoregement !!

Hmmh for me it was the opposite. But my milk came in like 36 hours after delivery so I didn't have much experience with the colostrum feeding sessions.

@MamaMoose: ditto! My milk came in about two days after he was born and he was nursing for like 45min at a time. It makes sense that he's getting filled up more quickly on milk though, and hopefully your supply will regulate soon so you're not terribly engorged!

@hilsy85: he is much more efficient now that my milk is in - constantly gulping and swallowing. With colostrum I really had to coax him to suck ! So I think that plays into it too maybe ?? I just want to make sure he is getting enough but he falls asleep and won't re latch once he is done !!

I have, like, zero experience. But I've been trying to do some reading to help prepare a little -- could it be that you're super engorged when he starts so he isn't latching for long enough? Maybe expressing a little (shower?) before nursing would help? IDK I feel stupid giving advice

@coacheswife123: yup as long as he's swallowing and having dirty dipes I'm sure you're all good if he falling asleep you can always try undressing him or tickling his feet or face to wake him.

@hilsy85: he has slept allll day today. I'm not complaining though haha! Dirty diapers have gone wayyyy up since milk came in so I guess we are good !

I'm sure the milk is filling him up. My milk came in 2 days pp so I don't really remember if he nursed in less time compared to the colostrum. I just remember having a hard time getting him to nurse with out falling asleep. I would have to tickle his cheek to get him to keep eating. He's always been an efficient nurser. I remember stressing out in the beginning b/c I could barely get him to nurse for 10 minutes.

I, obviously, have no experience to give advice yet. But I was really surprised to learn in our BF class this week that we should let baby fall asleep while nursing? I never knew that or would have thought that. The LN said to play with their feet, burp them in a sitting up position, and worst case, wipe his head with a cool, wet washcloth to not let them fall asleep during the feeding?
She also said not to pump right away, but in my mind, maybe pumping could help with the engorgement? Again, sorry I'm not experienced in this yet, but just a few thoughts.

@mrskc: ok this makes me feel better too! Baby has basically been in a pattern where he eats, sleeps, then wakes to eat, sleeps, etc. He has been sleeping like ALL day every day and the night too except feedings. I guess I need to just start thanking my lucky stars and enjoy this while it lasts haha instead of thinking something is wrong!

@shopaholic: if you pump right away then it signals your body to continue making more milk and could lead to an oversupply. So as uncomfortable as it is in the first few weeks, it's better just to hand express or pump just to take the edge off until your supply regulates to where you want it. Breastfeeding can be so confusing

@hilsy85: Oh! That makes sense! So my thinking pumping would/could help can make things worse. Yikes! And I remember it was so tough for you the first few weeks right? Have things gotten better?

LO is 6 days old but according to my baby connect app my nursing sessions have gotten shorter and less frequent. I would think that the breast milk (ESP if he's getting hind milk at least a couple sessions a day) is more filling.

@dagret: it totally is ! We had a weight check today and he went from 8 lb to 8.8 in 24 hrs !!! The breast milk is definitely filling him up and holding him longer !

@shopaholic: you'll be amazed how hard it is to wake a baby in those first few days! But it's good to keep them awake until they've eaten enough, otherwise you could end up having to feed again 5 minutes later! Also it's good to empty your breasts when possible because of mastitis. ( though I agree to wait on pumping unti, your supply stabilizes)
Re the original question I don't know! My babes have both been super poky eaters!

I pretty much just let DS nap at my boob as a newborn. I swear there were days I felt connected to him 24/7!
