How much does a newborn photo shoot typically cost?

It seems like all of the photographers that I really like in my area are $350-$500. That seems so high to me! Is that normal?

On the other hand, I have an acquaintance who does newborn photography. She is much, much cheaper but her quality isn't as good as the expensive photographers. She's good, but not great.

I'm not sure which route to take and I need to book soon. Are the photos worth $350+? Or should I go the cheaper route?
