How long did it take for your LO to shed his/her newborn skin? My LO came out at 38 weeks but still is quite flaky/dry on his arms and legs. We went to our 2 week checkup yesterday and the doctor said we could put on lotion his "dry skin" but I feel like his skin is still shedding and not necessarily dry. DH has eczema but we're crossing our fingers LO got my skin and not his!

I didnt know anything about this. Liv never had any flakes or dry skin. Maybe because she was born right at 40 weeks? I didnt know they shed!

@enjollah: totally makes sense. The only thing Liv had was cradle cap, and that went away around...like 3 months maybe? But it also didnt set in until month 2

I never really noticed skin shedding so much but I moisturize my baby with cetaphil moisturizing cream every day and have since I brought him home.

LO had flaky, dry skin for her first month of life. Later on, at her 4month appointment, we learned she had eczema. But the newborn skin lasted a month for us.

LO had dry skin for a while too and we ended up putting lotion on her. It helped a lot.

My son had super flaky skin for about a month. Our midwife suggested that we bathe him in water with a cup of milk and olive oil. We did, and his skin looked great after about a week.

RJ had flaky skin on his face and a little on his body for a while. We kept baths lukewarm and super short, and used baby lotion liberally and used Aquaphor / Eucerin on the bad spots. He's got great skin now.

She stopped shedding on her body around 3 or 4 weeks, but she still is shedding a little on her face at 5 weeks.

@Rubies: does your LO's eczema look different than the newborn flaky/dry skin? what do you do now? do you have to constantly moisturize? also, does your LO seem irritated by the eczema? sorry for all the questions!

@enjollah: So, the difference is that newborn skin is flaky but still soft. Eczema is just really dry skin that can become red and raw (on cheeks, especially, if LO drools a lot). I CONSTANTLY moisturize/Vaseline/humidifier and still it's dry. But not as dry as if I had left it alone. On her face, we use hydrocortisone when needed. LO doesn't seem irritated, thank goodness. But I can't imagine having such dry skin is comfortable.

I think for a good 4-5 weeks. I asked about the dry skin and lotion and was told that lotion won't help.
LO has soft wonderful delicious baby skin now.. I love nibbling on it. -
my ped said no to baby lotion but yes to baby oil while he sheds his extra skin.
