DD2 will be walking any day now, and I have no idea what shoes to put her in. She is currently wearing Pedi Pedi's but takes them off any chance she gets. I'd like her to have sturdy shoes, but she's so small (16 pounds) that I feel for some reason a hard sole shoe seems extreme. What was your child's first walking shoe?

Stride Rite SRTs. Highly recommend going to the store to get measured. My son's foot (accurately) measured as a 4 at home, but wouldn't fit when I got them in the mail. It wasn't until I went to the store I realized that while his foot was a 4, he had really wide feet and needed a 5W!
Because he got a nice wide shoe that fit his foot comfortably, he was walking a lot more securely pretty quickly. I got ones that had a velcro strap across the top so that it would stay on securely.

Do you have a Target? They have a cheaper line of Stride Rites (although I don't believe they have wides) and you may be able to at least try them on first. The only reason we had issues is because DS has hobbit feet and you'll be able to tell if your kid has wide feet because they just wont go in there even though the size is right! If you run into that problem, just order one or two sizes in Wide from Amazon and try them out, since returning is usually free.

R has been wearing Target's version of Stride Rite for months. He is 15 months and has been walking since 11 (exclusively since 13) but has the tiniest feet and has been wearing these shoes in a size 3 the whole time!

She recommended pedi ped Nikki, ugh can't remember the other one (I can look it up after work), and for tennis shoes this Japanese company that's been in business for 100 years. We got the converse Velcro shoes from Diapers.com. They were perfect for what we needed. He never seemed to struggle with the harder sole, but they are still somewhat flexible. We have since bought them in the next 2 sizes. And gave my sisters daughter the smaller ones. They are gray and pretty unisex so they look very cute and kinda cool/hip/punk with her outfits. And we get comments all the time on how cool they are!
ETA: but he was for sure at least 20lbs when he started walking. Not sure if that makes a difference. -
Both girls used Robeez while cruising and then Tsukihoshi's once walking.
ETA: we have a pair of the Target Stride Rite shoes for her dress shoes, and I'm not super impressed with the quality, fwiw. They do seem like a decent fit though.

@gingerbebe: Yes we do, she won't need a wide, we have the opposite problem of a very long skinny foot. Shoes don't stay on well!

DD was in moc's when she first started walking around 11.5 months, and we didn't get into harder soles till 13-14 months. She has a pair of stride rite boots, and a pair of new balance sneakers. We're a huge fan of the sneakers.

Robeez! The elastic ankle makes them trickier to pull off.

We went and got measured at Stride Rite. They have an entire line of shoes with more flexible bottoms specifically designed for early walkers.
