My pediatrician was telling me how important it is to have good breast and nipple care while breast feeding to reduce chances of any infection or thrush. But she didnt give me any specifics other than that I should use breast pads.
Do you guys have a routine for nipple care? Do you clean your nipples before you nurse?

I just wore breast pads. In the early weeks I washed my nipples with water after each feeding. Eventually stopped though. I never had issues with cracked/bloody nipples so didn't have to use any creams

After every feeding I would put EMAB's Natural Nipple Butter or Motherlove's Nipple Cream.

I tried to wash my bras every day or every other day instead of wearing them several days in a row. I lotioned up tremendously, after breastfeeding and after showering to keep them from cracking.

I rub in expressed milk after feeding, and try to keep the nips lanolinized after every feed and shower. The little dude is a cluster feeder though, so there's not much time when milk's just waiting for him. I also wash my hands after I do pretty much anything.

I used Lansinoh in the first month or two when I was really uncomfortable. I didn't wash before or after feeding because from what I read, breast milk was supposed to help with healing and soreness.

@kgbee: Yes to the hand washing! Between nursing and diaper changes, I feel like I'm washing my hands every 5 minutes. Now that I don't use the lanolin for nursing anymore, I use it as a moisturizer on my hands because they get so dry!

I actually don't wash my nipples, I read that soap draws moisture off the nipple and can cause rashes, infection or irritation. So I don't ever use soap on it. Just water. When they would get sore, I put breastmilk on it.
I never had to use lanolin.
And yes, I use 100% organic cotton breastpads too.

Rub expressed breastmilk on the nipple and let it air dry right after you finish feeding and then put lanolin on if they're tender.
Don't wash your nipples with water or soap because, especially in the early weeks, babies need to smell the milk source (if you wash them, it takes that smell away).

After nursing and pumping I would cover nipples in expressed milk, air dry, then apply copious amounts of Lansinoh for the first 2 months. Other than being a little sore, no real boob problems, our issues were with latching.
