My 13-month old thinks being told no is a funny game. He laughs every time we say it. I have no idea how this started, as it seemed like he was starting to understand what no meant (always accompanied by removing him from the object). Now it's a game. The louder/more harshly it's said, the funnier it is. I tried the clap-growl from the happiest toddler on the block book and that was downright hilarious! Ah! Any advice?

LO is 9 months and also thinks "no" is the funniest thing. So I will be interested to hear the advice!

Charlie went through a similar phase! The book Magic 1-2-3 was a big help for me... I removed all frustration from my voice, and that took a lot of the joy (of provoking a response) away from him.
I also get to his eye level and look him in the eye and explain to him why he shouldn't do something. Maybe at 13 months that won't work, but I read that being eye-level makes a huge difference even if it's just to say "no"... and after trying it out, I'm convinced!!

I agree with Mr. Bee. Also, I reserve "no" for more serious situations because they become desensitized if you use it too much.

At 8 months, DS thinks "no" is hilarious. I've been doing the sign for it as well and he thinks it's a joke.

@ohapostrophe: Oh I forgot... the best luck I had with saying no, was finding ways to avoid having to say it!

Thank you for your tips! I think one thing I'm definitely doing wrong is acting angry when I say no. I thought that would help him get the message but I think it was doing the opposite and I'm going to shoot for the calm assertive energy instead!
