Sometimes I just made a loud buzzing sound or clapped to get C's attention and then would look at him and say "uh, uh" with or without a head shake. Unfortunately I think once toddlers figure out "no" they stick with it for awhile regardless of how much you use it. It is something they gain some control with, which is a big deal. Overall we didn't get a lot of verbal "no" but we did get a lot of head shakes. Now we get a lot of "stop mama/daddy, no. don't like it".

We do a mix of everything, but I think every kid goes through a "NO" phase. We are definitely in it at 23 months

Every child definitely goes through a "no" stage, I think it's pretty unavoidable.

As for the always explaining & not just saying no... I did this with G & it worked great as a toddler & small child... Now it's biting me in the butt because he doesn't just "follow instruction" or take "no..." Very well, needing an explanation of some sort. It's really frustrating!

With P, I'm sure we'll still explain things so she can "learn" to choose differently but she'll definitely get plenty of short simple "no's"

We definitely say "no!" a lot in our house. We're quick to react, and it's the first thing we shout. Loudly.

Chloe is like a little Spiderman Houdini. I don't know how she does it, but I swear the kid climbs everything and anything. I can't keep her on the ground LOL

So... lot's of loud NOs!!!!! in our house lately....

We are in the thick of the "No" and "Why?" phases (they overlap for double the fun!). I use/d a lot of diversionary tactics on him, and I regularly employ the "First X, then [whatever he wants to do]," and "First X, and we'll do [whatever] later today/tomorrow." Non-negotiable stuff, like hitting, gets a "No." I think I have a really "easy" kid for the most part. I know what sets him off, and I do what I can to avoid those triggers, so it's not like every interaction involves him telling me "No!"

We try to follow up no with an explanation, but I still end up saying it.

C already says no, at 14 months, so we are royally screwed once she gets a little older,

I don't avoid saying no, but I try not to say it too much because I think it can lose it's meaning. My husband doesn't quite get this, though and he'll just keep saying it expecting L to stop doing whatever it is he is doing. I say it once or twice and then remove L from the situation and/or distract him with something else because I know he understands the word no, but he also doesn't have good impulse control yet (nor do I expect him to). He just can't help himself! He already says no-no to the dogs a lot!!

I don't know the answer but my husband and I don't say "no" that often, yet my son still manages to "no no no" all day long. We try to say "Don't do that!" or "Don't touch that" instead of a simple "no" because it does provide a little bit more of an explanation than just plain "no". But heck, we say "no" all day long too. I think it's hard to avoid saying "no" to a toddler. lol

I try and explain what B is doing wrong. Ex: "B we do not bang our toy against the wall/window." To which, he bangs the toy again and smiles at me.

We say a lot of no in my house and I was hoping I wouldn't. Unfortunately since DD doesn't ever want to listen (to me) it is said a lot.
