My little man has just started rolling, which has added a whole new level of fun chaos to our home. It's also started the discussion of what we need to do for baby-proofing vs. what to set limits on as far as no touching goes. I'm already telling him, "No touch," and moving him away from objects. He's 7 months old and I know it's too early for him to understand boundaries. But when do babies start to understand and how do you do it? I want the home to be a safe place for him (of course) but also one where he understands limits.

E is 15 months and knows what no means, and that he isn't supposed to touch certain things, but that doesn't mean that he obeys all the time. The things he isn't supposed to touch are generally what he runs right for while he flashes a knowing grin over his shoulder. I think until they have the mental capacity to understand reasoning and consequences, that you're better off baby proofing rather than trying to set specific boundaries.

My daughter is nearly 16 months she knows what it means when we tell her not to do something however she still goes and tries it again after a few minutes. So we have to baby proof things.

Trust me, they understand a lot more than you think!
And they pick up very quickly when you don't want them to do something (whether or not they actually listen to you is a whole other issue) haha

DS was fully cruising at 7 months and into everything. He walk along all the furniture trying to get his hands on everything and anything.
DH is really adamant about not using the word "no" so we would redirect or say, "ah-ah-ah!", which of course he only learned to mock a few months later, lol -

They can learn at 7 months. My son learned that the one cord still snaking through the living room was a "no touch" and that was much much earlier than 12 months old (probably 8 or 9).

We tell our LO *no ma'am!* when she bee lines for the electronics.

@MsLipGloss: we do "no ma'am" too. At eight months she absolutely knows what it means because she turns and smirks at us. And.... Then does what she wants anyway.

My LO is 7.5 months and she knows what ouch and no mean. If she is about to do something that she knows is wrong, she'll grab at it and the look at us.
