I own the Kindle Paperwhite. I bought it after watching/reading about a dozen reviews directly comparing the Nook to the Paperwhite. The Paperwhite looked clearly better to me. I have no complaints about my Kindle at all. I love it and use it daily!

With the paperwhite they charge for removing the ads, but the ads only show up when you are not using the device (on the screen when it's "off") so many people don't mind them. I got them removed though.

I will say this: if you change your mind and consider a "colour e-reader" (ie, a tablet), do yourself a favour and buy a regular old Android tablet, which will have much more bang for your buck. I highly recommend the e-ink over an LCD screen if you mainly plan on reading on this device. E-ink is SO much nicer to read on.

I recommend the Kindle personally due to the amount of titles that they have. The Nook lending feature (and the Kindle one) is based on whether the published will allow lending for each title so don't let that feature be the basis as to which one you get.

ETA: If you have Amazon Prime, you can access their lending library as well.

@fussygal: I've had a Nook before and currently have the Kindle Paperwhite. I would go with the Kindle Paperwhite, especially if DH will be reading after you have fallen asleep. I read mostly after my DH is asleep and the light on the paperwhite is perfect for reading, but doesn't disturb him. There are about 15 or so levels of brightness. I also think the Amazon site is much easier to use than the Barnes and Noble one. Also the lending feature with the Nook was a big letdown because the lendable books were not very popular books and there weren't very many of them.

I have an old kindle that I bought last year, I think. I chose Kindle over Nook because of the ebook selection on Amazon's website.

I don't know if Nook's (Barnes and Noble) selection has improved since I got it.

BTW, when you get it, you can go to pixelofink.com for free or discounted ebooks. I got a lot of books that way.

When I read, I love it. I just got an ipad mini and I read Catching Fire using the Kindle app and I could feel my eyes being strained while using it. Maybe I just have to get used to the ipad. Right now, when I'm at home, I definitely prefer my kindle and if I know I'm doing a lot of reading (like on a plane), I'll definitely bring my kindle. I do have the one without paperwhite and I just have a light or a lamp when I read in the dark.

Oh, I got the version with 3G. It helps when I'm at the pool or beach and there is no wifi around. Have I used the 3G enough to be worth what I spent? Maybe not. I usually have the wifi off to conserve the battery.

@bluestriped bee: Yes! I love the 3G version. A few weeks ago I ended up stuck in a waiting room unexpectedly and it was great that I was able to download a book to read while there, otherwise I would have been sitting there for 2 hours with absolutely nothing to occupy myself with.
