I want to get some of the basic nursing stuff before the baby arrives so I'm not scrambling to go out and find what I need after my milk comes in. What items (and brands) can you not live without?

Are you planning to pump? That's kind of a separate-but-related set of supplies that I don't want to bother going into if it won't be useful

If pumping, I do NOT recommend the Medela storage/freezer bags. They don't lie flat, which is annoying if you want to stack a bunch in the freezer. I like the Lansinoh brand.
I pump at work and use the steam bags to sterilize pump parts in between sessions.
I also have a bunch of extra sets of pumping parts, because I hate having to wash them all the time.

Agree re: lansinoh bags. Other nice things: nursing bras, support pillow, lanolin, hot/cold packs for engorgement or blocked ducts, and obviously a pump and bottles. If you are pumping with a double electric, a hands-free pumping bra is nice.

I'd say a good nursing book is essential in the first couple weeks. There's a lot of questions that come up and a book you can just go to real quick may help. Other than that lanolin and maybe a heat pad was all I needed the first couple weeks.

A friend got me LLL Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, and I haven't read others. I used it most the first month after baby and sometimes wished there was more info on nursing those first couple weeks. It's a good book, definitely worth having, but I'm not sure there might be something better out there that goes into a bit more of the first weeks.

@BabyBoecksMom: Highly recommend "A Nursing Mother's Companion." It breaks things down by age of the baby and really focuses on those first weeks, which is helpful.

I'd also find the number of a good lactation consultant and have that on hand.
