I thought this was really interesting-- probably something we all think about:

I want to SAH anyway, but even if I returned to work, with the cost of child care (MA has the highest average cost in the country) and taxes (DH makes more so I get taxed higher) it would be a really small amount of take home anyway. That made my decision a lot easier to SAH).

@Pirouette: My friend, who just went back to work, have been posting interesting articles on the subject on facebook. I just read what she posts rather than wading through the zillions out there

I respect the Sandbergs and the Mayers of the working world, but their situations color their POVs and are not attainable for the majority of working women and working women with children.
I am at a point where I can not Lean In. Maybe pre-kids or later when my son is older, but time is a finite resource and my 2 year old needs me more at this point.

@Foodnerd81: just read it and completely agree. the fact that virtually none of the child care costs are deductible to so many families creates a serious burden to the family and a major inequity, particularly for those who live in higher tax areas. It completely discourages women in major metro areas to return to working. my DH was stunned when I told him that no part of child care will be deductible because you always hear that having a kid is good for your taxes, haha.

Oh yes this is reality and childcare is "cheap" where I love. Problem is that there is also limited childcare which means months on waiting lists. And that is just to get in. When we lost childcare in February I wasn't sure we would get any. Our current preschool made some exceptions and its been working for us.
