LO had a bout of it, though I was asymptomatic. It actually didn't seem to bother her but I wanted it gone! She got a prescription for nystatin and I rubbed white vinegar on my nipples after most of our nursing sessions to kill off anything that might have been left there. It took awhile but eventually we kicked it (FX...hopefully it doesn't come back!). If you use meds, make sure to keep using them for a few days after the white patches disappear because, as LO's ped said, "yeast is tricky stuff so you want to make sure it's gone, gone, gone before you stop."

Hang free. sit around without a shirt or bra on. keep the area clean. Use monistat cream (safe for babe!).
That's all I got and I hope you find relief really soon. I dealt with thrush throughout my ENTIRE breastfeeding journey. So, I feel for you.

Wash your bras/camis with vinegar.
Also, call your OB. It's one pill of Diflucan, and totally worth it.

@knittylady: Limit sugar, air your boobs, Motherlove diaper rash and thrush cream, and talk with doc about the least "medicated" way of treating. Like 1 diflucan as PP mentioned. Good luck!!

@knittylady: have you been prescribed anything by your doctor? Nilstat / Nystatin has only a 35% success rate so if it doesn't work for your LO then definitely go back and ask for an alternative.
Keep your breasts dry, wash your bra's etc in a hot wash with vinegar and sterilise any paci's etc that have come in contact with baby's mouth.
Thrush sucks so I hope you can get rid if it soon!

my friend just had it and she took diflucan and wore Silverette ( silver is anti fungal ) and she was free of it in 48 hours! is painful but if treated correctly you will get relief soon!

Oh UGH. Thrush is the pits. Make sure you and baby are both treated or you'll keep passing it back and forth. We got rid of it with one round of diflucan (me) and nystatin (baby). Boil everything that touches your nipples or baby's mouth daily (nipples, pacifiers, nipple shields etc).

I have heard good things about genetian violet (though careful because it stains!) Thrush sucks so sorry

Thanks for the tips everyone! My midwife suggested genetian violet and that's what we're using currently. I'm also sanitizing all bottles etc. will have to do a bra wash with vinegar though- how much vinegar do I put in? Any detergent with it?
LO has a peds appt on Tuesday so I'm just going to wait till then to see about nystatin. Should I go ahead and fill the Rx for diflucan now? I was going to just go with this purple mess but of course want this gone ASAP!!

@knittylady: I didn't bother with GV. I called and had diflucan filled by my OB (my GP argued with me that I couldn't possibly have thrush on my nipples. "A yeast infection is vaginal." I've since switched drs!). And I called my ped and asked for an rx for nystatin too, they wanted to see her but agreed that though she had no signs, they would treat her to be safe.

@sorrycharlie: yikes first dr!!! Do you think I should wait for LO to get his Rx before I start mine? I don't want to spread it back and forth...

@knittylady: I think we started within a day of each other? It's been so long.. I so hope I don't have it again second round!!
