During my chat with my friend about white hairs, I told her I plucked them and she asked if I was worried about having 2-10x as many grow back! She is not touching her white hair! I laughed and said I don’t believe in that…. And sure enough… the next day I had 3 pop up around the one I might have just plucked. I called her and told her she cursed me!! Haha. We had a good laugh about it.

So I’m listing a few old wives tales that I think are pretty common. Check the ones you believe in! If you have one that isn’t listed please let me know!

You forgot walking under ladders and breaking mirrors! Those are much more common than the soufle one.

As an aside, I am impressed with how dedicated you are to your polls.

Also, I started to reply that I was pretty sure the carrots / eyesight thing wasn't an old wives tale, but strict fact... and then I googled it. MIND BLOWN.

@Raindrop: Back again, I also googled the arthritis / knuckles thing thinking that was strict fact.... again, mind blown! I'm learning so much. I need to stop trusting my parents.

Do you mean the oven door or the front door with the soufflé? Because opening the oven door can cause many types of baked goods to fall.

But generally speaking I don't believe any of these. They're mostly superstitions, and I've read studies on several disproving them.

@Torchwood: Actually I'm not sure... the first few are ones from my head but the rest... I just googled quickly. I'm going to guess... the oven door. I will say I think some of these *might* be facts... but I'm not sure... it's suppose to play on what you parents told you growing up.

Bahhh!!! Apparently the sitting close to the TV = bad for eyes is also a myth!!! My parents just told me lie after lie after lie!! And I've already been perpetuating those lies to my kids!!!!

I voted that opening an umbrella inside is bad luck because I think it's just asking for something to get knocked over or broken, and thus resulting in bad luck.

I also voted for the souffle one because I think that one is true (at least that's what Master Chef taught me)

The soufflé one has some truth - opening the oven door can drop the temperature enough to affect whatever you're baking. I also voted for knocking on wood - I don't really believe it, but I like to keep my bases covered

I believe the soufflé one and would not have called that a wives tale. It's happened to me.

Carrots have beta carotene which does help vision but of course the science binehind it is more complicated than that. In theory does help eyesight. But the science behind it of course is more complicated than that.

@travellingbee: So for me... personally I don't think old wives tales HAVE to be false. It's just something your parents pass down to you ... well that's my impression. I can be totally wrong of course! Ha!

The souffle one came up on a lot of "popular old wives tales" lists.

It looks like if you open the door once or maybe a few times you should be fine… but if you open it too often your soufflé is in troubles!

False. Is it an old wives' tale that you should not open the oven door when baking a soufflé? Opening the oven door is unlikely to be a disaster unless your kitchen is very draughty, but you are much more likely to make a successful soufflé if you keep the oven door closed during cooking. The soufflé should increase in volume by at least half and sometimes as much as double and to do this it must cook at the correct temperature. Opening the oven door will cause a sudden drop in temperature.

Don't open the oven! As the soufflé bakes, resist opening the oven. Like with all baking, opening the oven door causes the temperature in the oven to drop dramatically, and the more you open it, the harder it is for the oven to get back up to temperature. With a soufflé, opening the oven too often can make it rise less dramatically.
