My LO will not nap for longer than 20 to 40 minutes at a time. I have tried so many different methods of getting her to go back down, but nothing has worked. She used to take a pacifier, but she found her thumb and lost interest in her paci. Well, now she has un found her thumb and is just a wreck at nap time. I am seriously at a loss. Any tips?

We dealt with this from 7 weeks until 4 months. My whole day during that time was spent getting my baby to take a nap!!! My best advice is to watch wake times and put your LO down for a nap every 1.5 hrs (how old is she again?).
Unfortunately short naps are super common until babies transition to 2 naps.

I don't have any tips because my LO is 8 months and has been the same way for months. Sooooo...exhausting! I feel for you!

@Mrsdaredevil: ok...so ya, use wake times of 1.5-1.75 hours. Sometimes we could extend naps but reinserting the pacifier or just leaving LO for 20 minutes after he woke up. He would cry for a bit then go back to sleep. At 6 months, he still does it now :S.

No advice, but I'm right there with you. My daughter naps for 30 minutes at a time, and I've had zero success with nap extensions. At a certain point I just stopped trying, and I decided that this is the baby I've been dealt. She's a great sleeper at night, so it's not the end of the world that she's a terrible napper. It's more of an annoyance. Maybe I should do another round of attempting nap extensions now that DD is almost 5 months old...

@skibobrown: we have the same problem an DD is the same age! She used to be a perfect night sleeper but that has gone out the window too. What do/did you try for extending the naps? LO won't take pacifier or swaddle anymore.

Is she getting enough activity time? I know DD is a few weeks younger but she has quite a bit of play time and tummy time or even baths in the morning to wear her out so then I swaddle and she falls asleep in her crib for 1-2 hours. That's the only crib nap she takes, the rest are in her stroller, car seat and front carrier.
With DS no matter how much we played, he wasn't a good napper until 6 months, then he started taking three 45 minute naps a day in his crib and by 8 months that changed to two 1.5 hour naps. It gets easier! But it is definitely frustrating.

@HeatherlovesKenny: ooh yes, lots of activity! She now has an exersaucer she loves, lots of tummy time, books, bouncy seat with mobile, rattles, walks, etc. She is happy and engaged most of the time, even when she is sleep deprived.

The only way I can get my LO to take long naps is if I nap with her. If I put her down and leave her, she will sleep for 40 minutes max, but if I lie down next to her, SOMETIMES she will sleep for 2 hours. I read Baby Whisperer and wrote down her sleeping patterns for about a week and found that she takes a longer nap in the morning and another longer nap in the afternoon so I try to lie down with her then. Who knows, our pediatrician said some babies are just serial catnappers.

My LO is passed out in my arms right now - only way I could get him down... I feel your pain! Occasionally he will take a good long nap in the swing but otherwise it's painfully short naps.

The only thing that has worked for us is catching her right when she is giving cues that she's sleepy (i.e. rubbing her eyes) and getting her into the crib almost immediately, with blinds drawn and white noise machine on.

Sawyer needs a little help to take long naps, he needs his soother, swaddle, and white noise to take a long nap. Sometimes if he is really fighting it I nap with him, and when we nap together he always takes a long nap.

No words of advice - I'm struggling with the same thing. LO is an awesome night time sleeper, but a terrible napper. It takes forever to get her down, then she's only asleep for 40 minutes!
