When did you put your toddler in open-toed shoes/sandals? How long had they been walking? K is outgrowing her closed-toed soft jelly shoes and I wish I had the foresight to buy another pair a size up!
Besides the soft-sole issue, I'm having a hard time finding closed toed and waterproof ones that I like aesthetically as well. She has only been walking about 3 weeks.

Julia has to have closed toed sandals for daycare. We have an Umi pair I really like.

Sadie's been walking since December, so she obviously wasn't in open-toed shoes right away, but she's super clumsy & still does fine in them. She's got tons, but my favorite are her jellies from Old Navy (picture below). I like Sadie's Salt Waters, but they might be hard for K to walk in now. They're pretty stiff at first & have to be broken in.

We used pediped closed toe sandals the year LO learned to walk. They still had softer soles but had some stability.

A is in open toed ones and she is so clumsy but she's been totally fine with them.

@babynumber1: @photojane: I bought K a couple pairs of the Original Saltwater sandals before she could walk and they were still too big. I think I'll have to pull them out soon. But I was wondering if the Sea Wees or SunSan Sweetheart styles might be better for a new walker? Which style SW do you have?
@photojane: The closed-toed ones she's outgrowing are ON too! We tried on these ones and they're too big - her feet slope forward and out. I'm kicking myself for not buying another one bow they're all sold out and I've been to 3 ONs!

@shopaholic: We bought the original Salt Waters - I think they're the cutest. 
They run a little big in the length, but I want her to be able to wear them all summer, so I got her the 3. There's extra room in front of her toes, but I just do them tight around her ankle. Wearing them in the bath & then letting her walk around with them wet will help stretch/fit them quicker, but they will still take a little time to flex with her foot.
Sadie's feet are super small too, but she fits in the ON jellies fine. Why weren't they fitting? I can look at my ON & see if they have any of the close-toed left - they had a bunch last time I was there. What size/color?

R wears ON flip flops and SKR sandals on the weekend and does fine with them. She has been walking since Feb.

@shopaholic: probably diapers.com? often you can find a good coupon there. last year we had the pediped originals which have a very soft sole. they also make some more structured soles.

I put W in these about 5-6 weeks after she started walking. They are really sturdy and provided a lot of support for her ankles, which really helped. (I don't know if you can tell, but they go up kind of high in the back.)
I have noticed a lot of open toed sandals are kind of flimsy and don't offer support--these is not great for our new walking babes! These were seriously AWESOME. Her first pair of hard-soled shoes.

@photojane: The wide strap kind her foot was sliding forward and her toes touch the ground, if that makes sense. Probably because she's in between sizes. But I DID find another pair of ON jelly (similar to your style) that I hoarded last year on sale!

You should check out that brand, though, and see if you find anything cute. I think it's a European brand.

I didn't put her in open toed sandals until she turned two (this summer). She started walking in march 2013, and I kept her in stride rites all summer. I felt like they provided the most support for her when she was so unsteady on her feet.
This summer I bought her a pair of white saltwaters - so cute

My 4 year old just got her first pair of open toed sandals (we got her two pairs of saltwater sandals for this summer!), and she still manages to get her feet caught and falls all the time! Our go-to summer shoes are keens. They are clunky, but my girls have had great luck with them!

Ditto on the salt waters. Bought them last summer (yellow sweethearts) lasted all summer. Could be dressed up or down- and easy to clean them up to look good again. They matched everything! Bought them again for this summer.

I wouldn't put my LO in open toed shoes-- he is so clumsy! I'd be so nervous about him stubbing his toes, tripping, or dropping things on his feet outside, or hurting his toys while kicking a ball, etc. Jumping Jacks makes some pairs that are super cute and they have velcro closures

Lo's been walking for about 5.5 months and she's walking just fine in original style saltwater sandals. I think that style is the cutest and offers more foot coverage than some of the other styles.

I put mine in classic saltwater at 12 months, but she had been walking for months. They are open toed, but the toes aren't really exposed and we've never had an issue with scraping toes or anything. They are seriously adorable and she loves them. She grabs them and bring them over to us to put them on her first thing in the morning. They run big too!
