I've done it a few times with puffs when he was younger. But I usually don't take him to the store with me, so i don't do it often. But I have no problem doing it.
@winter_wonder: I used to feel the same as you, but now I have no issue with it. I think it's one of those things that you side eye before having a kid, but after it makes total sense. I'm pretty sure it'll change for you
And I don't mean that in the "oh YOU'LL SEE" annoying way that people speak to expectant parents. I mean it in the way that it's just one of those things that is bound to happen at some point. When you have the screaming 8 month old in the grocery store, you just want it to STOP and that container of puffs becomes really tempting. Puffs = baby crack. Remember that if you remember nothing else

I've never done this. We bring our own snacks in our own packaging if LO is coming with us to the store. I've worked as a cashier and never batted an eye when people did it though. To be honest, cashiers don't really care about a lot of things as long as you don't hold up the line.

@Bao: I've let the kids snack on something before. But I stopped after I heard about that case where a pregnant mom forgot to pay for a sandwich at Safeway and was arrested!!

I just did this yesterday for the first time-- lo was melting down over the crackers I was buying and refused any of the other snacks I had on me
nectarine / 2951 posts
I do this all the time without any shame. It has never crossed my mind that it might be inappropriate. It keeps my kid calm and I'm buying it anyway!

I have a couple of times if she's melting down. Usually the culprit is my husband, but only if his sugar drops suddenly and he needs something right then (he is diabetic).
bananas / 9118 posts
Only once or twice during an extreme melt down with puffs. Most of the time they get whatever as we check out. Lately I let my oldest pick out a Matchbox car and he has to behave to get it at the end.
I have once for myself during an allergic reaction, I popped a couple of benadryl in the middle of Walgreens.

I did this while pregnant and starving! Cashier didn't blink an eye at getting an open bag of popcorn to ring up.

I haven't and I would really try not to. I guess it's just a personal thing but I just feel like I want lo to be able to wait and understand that she can't have whatever she wants whenever she wants and also that it isn't ours until we pay. I do usually have snacks and water and lo is pretty good in stores. I have seen kids having meltdowns and I empathize in that case. I do get why people do it but it's just something I want to try not to do. I definitely don't get people who just let their kids eat stuff when they're not crying or anything. It could also be that my mom was very strict about this and it made an impact on me so I feel more strongly.

Never for food off the shelves - I did do it recently when I was heavily pregnant and feeling dizzy and opened a bottle of water for a quick drink.
honeydew / 7586 posts
Every time! He always gets a banana when we first get to the store and then a gingerbread cookie from the bakery. Our store is totally fine with it and most of the time gives him the cookie for free anyway.

I don't do it, but I don't mind those that do. I want to teach the kids to be patient and wait. If they really want to purchase and eat a snack, then they have to wait until we check out. It can be a tough lesson, but I don't want to get in the habit of them getting a snack from the store to eat every time we shop. I pack my own snacks for them.

I almost never take him shopping with me because he is so hard to shop with. But a couple of times, when I have, I have let him open something.
persimmon / 1043 posts
I've never done it and don't plan to. I guess it's bc my parents are small business owners and I know it bugs them when people do this (cuz honestly, many don't pay and even coach their kids to steal). So anyway no I don't ever open things until they are paid for and teach my kids the same.
nectarine / 2028 posts
We do it with pouches all the time (I can't buy them without him signing "more more more" and crying, so I give him one to suck on as I throw the rest in my cart). I simply take the empty pouch and run it through the checkout line. The cashier's never even noticed it's empty before! I do it with pretzels, too. Again, I think they see it so commonly that they don't even bat an eye. Anything to make shopping with a baby/toddler easier!

I've never done it and to be honest it's not something I'm comfortable with or want my kids to expect.
persimmon / 1467 posts
I worked as a cashier and always felt it was a little dishonest at the worst and rude at best. Even now I make a point of feeding my kid before we go. He's too good at opening things so it has to be an all or nothing rule with him. There was one time he was starving and knew what one of the snacks was but I made him wait till after we paid to have some.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
I totally have, although not in awhile, because our grocery store gives kids a free cookie, and that keeps her busy. But sometimes I end up having to get a milk to go with it

I have in desperate times both for LO and for myself while pregnant - usually just a bottle of water out of a pack I am already buying. For DD, it's usually a granola bar out of a larger box. So no chance of forgetting to pay.
pomelo / 5720 posts
I usually bring snacks in with me but I haven definitely given them a bar or pouch and then paid for it on our way out. I wouldn't open any toys or other items though.
pomegranate / 3779 posts
I've done it with pouches and tortillas for LO if she is having a meltdown. I do it with drinks for myself. I've never thought anything of it and cashiers usually hand me back my drink or offer to throw away the empty container.
eggplant / 11824 posts
I don't (baring an emergency situation or uber meltdown) for the reasons @JerricaBenton mentioned - I enforce that LO can't take packaged toys out of the package and play with them while at Target or whatever because we have to pay for the things we want first - why is it different with food at a grocery store? Until we pay for it, it isn't ours to just use how we like. To each their own, but it just seems rude to me. My mom definitely never let us eat food while at the grocery store, so it's just not something I'm used to or personally comfortable with.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
I try not to. When she was younger, we would bring snacks with us. Once or twice I gave in and let her have a pouch. I'm ALWAYS afraid I'll forget to pay for it, though so I try not to just for that reason. My mom used to get so mad when she saw kids eating in the grocery store. Maybe that's why I don't do it!! Haha.

I had no idea this was a thing. No little one for me yet, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone do this. Seems really strange to me.
persimmon / 1129 posts
If we're nearing meltdown mode, I totally do this with things that aren't messy and don't have to be weighed.
Our grocery store also gives out free treats to the kids - the bakery gives out sugar cookies and the deli gives out cheese slices. I think a lot of stores do this.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
I try to reason with him with waiting till we pay before opening. It works about 90% of the time. Otherwise, if it's something I have to weigh to pay (like a banana), I pay for it first, open it for DS then continue my grocery shopping.
pineapple / 12053 posts
I've done it on occasion when DD was melting down and we absolutely had to get groceries but usually I try to tell her, we have to pay for things first. The cashiers didn't seem like it was an issue at all!
ETA: I think the sampling of the bulk foods is way worse and I see adults doing that for themselves fairly often.
clementine / 806 posts
our grocery store has a cute little kid-sized fruit stand by the door filled with clementines and bananas. There is a piggy bank too -- they ask for 25 cents for a piece of fruit. DS is only 14 months, so we haven't used it yet, but I think it is brilliant!!
pomelo / 5257 posts
I've done this for myself, like open a bottle of water to drink while shopping if I'm super thirsty. I don't see why it would be an issue -- they can still scan it easily after being opened and I'm still paying for it either way.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
I think I've done it once for myself because I was absolutely starving haha.
pomegranate / 3355 posts
I have def done this. It's not an every time occurrence and I do take snacks to try to avoid DD wanting something but sometimes you just can't help it and honestly I don't think it's a big deal! Most of the time its a fruit that DD wants, like we'll get the box of clementine's and she'll want one, so she has one. She also eats some grapes.. I see that mentioned a LOT above but she only has a few, not like the entire bag so even though it's weighed at check out I doubt 5-6 grapes weight that much.
I have also had a soda while shopping and given the empty bottle to be scanned. Probably only like 3 times in my lifetime, but I've done it.

We do this all the time. I grew up doing it, too, lol. I do the exact same thing my mom did - I go to the cracker aisle and I get him one of those little snack packs of animal crackers (the red ones that look like part of the circus). He only gets them at the grocery store, and they keep him occupied almost the entire time. Otherwise he's complaining to get out, taking his shoes off and throwing them, etc.
If it makes it better, our grocery store has these scanner guns and you walk around scanning all of your stuff. So I scan it (along with all the other groceries) and then pay at the end.
If you are lucky enough to have a kid who's content while grocery shopping, thank your lucky stars. Not all of us are that lucky

I've definitely done it, and it seems pretty common where I live.. I see most toddler-aged kids with a snack in the store. Makes my life infinitely easier and allows me to focus on getting what I need to get in/out quicker. My son is not of the "reasoning-with" age yet so that doesn't work for us. I do 100% of the grocery shopping in our household and have my son the vast majority of those trips.
A quick tip: My son loves apples (and they last almost the entire store!) so that's often his snack. When I'm checking out I just ask the cashier to weigh one of the other apples twice to make up for the one in his hand. Easy peasy!
Edit: And another thing to add, I worked as a cashier in a grocery store for 5 years through high school and college... it never bothered me or any of my coworkers/managers a bit when parents did this!
pomelo / 5298 posts
Never would have thought to do this with a pouch, but after reading this I totally did it today! I picked LO up from daycare for a ear check at the ped and it was snack time. So she missed out and was hangry. Since we needed to go to Walgreens to get a prescription, I grabbed a pouch and let her have it while we waited. I grabbed the diaper bag this morning and a sippee of water, but didn't think to grab a snack.
So thanks everyone
And I bought extras that are now residing in my diaper bag.
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
I don't usually, I prefer them to understand we have to pay for things first. But, desperate times and all.... We did it today and the cashier was fine about it, although DH was horrified.
pear / 1703 posts
When LO was little we did this often. A bun or an apple to snack on while we were walking around were favourites.
As far as the "we have to pay for things before we eat them" thought process goes, every time we dine at a restaurant, we are eating before paying
