I do this with no hesitation

Constantly. With pouches, especially. I just hand the empty pouch to the cashier and he/she tosses it after she rings it up. Never had anyone say a thing about it.

I haven't ever done it but LO also hasn't ever requested anything. I guess if she was hungry and cranky I would. The only time I wouldn't is if it's produce that you pay by the weight. I've seen kids eating grapes out of the bag and I don't agree with that as it'll weigh less (and cost less) after a bunch have been eaten.

I pretty much always let LO snack on something at the grocery store. I don't think it's a big deal.

I won't have a LO until March so maybe my perspective will change a bit, but I think this is strange when parents do this.

It just feels weird to use/consume something before you've paid for it (imo).

It's not considered stealing until you leave the store.

I've done it occasionally with pouches. Anything to make it easier!

My grocery store actually just started putting out a basket of fruit for kids to take a piece and snack while shopping. It's awesome!!

I am not comfortable doing this. But I also understand 100% why people do it.

I do it with pouches all the time. As everyone else has posted, I avoid it with produce since it has to be weighed. I stood behind an older couple the other day that were chowing down on grapes while waiting to check out and was wondering if you get in trouble for it!

All the time. New snacks are what get us through grocery shopping!

I've done this on occasion and don't see a problem with it, like other people have said, as long as it isn't something that costs by weight. I also worked in a grocery store for years and saw it happen all the time and never thought anything of it.

I actually just remembered growing up, my mom used to let us have things like half a roll- we could eat two halves but had to leave each half so the cashier could count them (the fresh deli rolls you pay per piece).

Yes - literally every time we are in the grocery store he has pouches. But, I actually feel more comfortable giving him new and then paying for them. I'd feel more weird if I packed some in his diaper bag and then gave him those. I'd worry that people would think I was stealing..

I have done this a few times and not thought anything of it. I'd never do it with produce. Last weekend I forgot to hand his snack over and only remembered after I paid. Had to do another transaction, oops.

Every time we go grocery shopping. It's the only way we get through a shopping trip.

@winter_wonder: I used to think this too, but as long as I have a wrapper or package that can be scanned, I do it most times!

I've done this once or twice for my toddler if I forget or run out of snacks for him to nosh on while we're in the store. But I always pick something like puffs or mum mums or something that's neat and easily portionable (i.e. nothing messy or requires measuring, etc). I don't have a problem with this and neither do cashiers, but I try not to make it a habit.

BUT when I was a kid (like school age), my mom used to do this with all sorts of stuff, like ice cream bars. She'd crack open a box of Crunch bars or Klondike bars to eat while we were shopping (because she wanted to eat one) and I remember being SO EMBARRASSED by it. I would get all anxious and stressed out that we'd get in trouble or how gross it was to hand a box full of popsicle sticks and wrappers to a cashier and get that side eye. So I guess it can cut both ways.

I don't do it, not because I have a problem with it, but because with my son, it turns into "we can open anything at any store."

I have for sure, things where they don't have to be weighed. She ate almost a whole container of berries once.
One time, she ate a ton of grapes from the bag before I noticed (I was checking the flyers), and since they need to be weighed, i had the cashier weigh in a much bigger bag, then took the smaller bag instead. I felt pretty bad then.
