Making a 2nd post tonight... anyone have experience with oral surgeries for their LOs?

DS is 7 yo. He already got the lower two permanent teeth and his top from baby teeth are wiggly. During the regular check up, the dentist recommended an x-ray just to make sure everything is fine in there. Turns out, it was not.

They found that instead of growing 2 top front permanent teeth, DS is growing 4. Yes, 4 !! There are two permanent looking bigger teeth, and two smaller ones in the middle. Dentist said one is going up (to the nose) and one is coming down. If we don't remove it it will cause problems later. We were referred to an oral surgeon. Did a 3D scan and the same result. Long story short, the oral surgery is coming up this Friday.

Anyone have any experience with oral surgery this young? He will go down to sleep during the operation and he will be out of school the full day on Friday, and rest the weekend, theoretically go back fine on Monday. We were advised on soft foods. Now that it is coming up right at the corner, any advice you guys have? Any foods may help and easier to eat? Are they going to give any medication and were there any complication and how you would do things differently...etc. etc.? DS hasn't really had any pills as a form of medication yet (mostly liquid via syringe still), but I am thinking syringe wouldn't work because the wound will be front and center, and I don't want to have to fight to get him to take the meds (if there were any)!

Oh wow! Good luck! I had a lot of oral surgery as a child because my baby teeth wouldn’t fall out (I only lost two on my own, the rest were extracted). They had huge roots on them too, and my adult teeth were growing in around them, weird! Thank god for braces and modern dentistry or I would be a mess. Haha. I think my first one was at age 8 or 9.

Anyway, I remember lots of soft foods (ice cream and mashed potatoes since those were things i liked) and rest for the day or two after. Ice (bags of peas) sometimes on my cheeks for more intense extractions. Tylenol will certainly help if he is sore, stick with liquid if that’s what he is used to, it’s the same thing. I remember rebounding pretty quickly.

I never was put under fully, just laughing gas, and was a little loopy after. My son had surgery recently and the anaesthesia made him nauseous, just take it sloooow, and make sure he’s not too hot.

I remember gifts from my parents too, haha! I had to have 8 molars extracted at one time and I got a Nintendo for recovery Of course I just remember that, but the bribery helped, and I never got the tooth fairy. He will be fine! Any surgery is scary, but I bet he will recover fast!

I had an extra permanent tooth removed when I was about six or seven years old and I’m trying to think back to anything helpful to pass along, but am surprised by how little I remember! I was put out with some kind of twilight sleep, I think, and remember feeling groggy afterward, but don’t remember lots of pain. I imagine I took Tylenol or something along those lines, but can’t imagine it was a pill because I couldn’t swallow pills easily until I was in my twenties.

I do recall eating lots of milkshakes and mashed potatoes afterward and not wanting either for a long spell after that! And my mom let me pick a special stuffed animal to have after the surgery.

I hope it goes smoothly on Friday!!

Oh THANK YOU you both! This really really helps!!

The thing is DS doesn't like potatoes (other than fries, of course) at all. He claims he likes mash potatoes but I have never seen him eating them. He also said he wants rice porridge, and alphabet soup. But again, who knows. I have all the things ready to make rice porridge and I have a feeling he is not going to eat any of it. My thought is wouldn't it hurt the front wound when he drinks the soup/ porridge? The only sure thing is ice-cream, but I can't feed him ice-cream for a day ....

Thanks for the tip on the ice pack! And yes, DH actually has 2 gifts for DS. Poor thing, his birthday is tomorrow (we had his birthday party done 2 weeks ago lol) and the surgery is on Friday.... DH is traveling right now but he will be back Friday afternoon. I said just save the 2 gifts until after his surgery

@caitcat: Thank you thank you for sharing your experience!! I am glad that there wasn't a lot of pain for you, hopefully the same with DS......!

I had oral surgery at 9 so a bit older and it was different. I had the lower lip frenulum removed and a skin graft from the roof of my mouth sewn in its place to cover my teeth roots. I also don't remember much of it. I was awake for it and I hate that I remember that part. But the recovery I don't recall. Other then the "bandage" they used to cover the wounds in my mouth was like silly putty. I don't remember pain. And when I was a little older like 12 I had 4 permanent molars removed. That I was put out for and I just remember eating frostys from Wendys. But again I don't remember the recovery being bad at all. When I was 22 and had 4 wisdom teeth extracted now that was a crappy recovery that I remember way too much of

DO you know how the anesthesia will be administered? I think that's the most important piece to understand in this situation.

When my son had oral surgery 2 years ago, it was general anesthesia, administered under the supervision of an anesthesiologist.

We had adenoids out and tubes in with general anesthesia at the children’s hospital this past summer, so not the same, but I wanted to chime in that coming out of the anesthetic was the worst part for us. He was so out of it and cried a lot. It was difficult for me to see him like that. But once that wore off, he literally ate 7 popsicles at the hospital and we were discharged. He was back to normal later that day even though they told us he would have throat pain/ear pain from the adenoids and should be out of daycare for a week. Surgery Friday, back to daycare Tuesday after the holiday Monday. Also one of you will likely have to go with your son into the operating room and be there while he gets put under, which can be a little alarming as well because it’s so sterile and cold and they put the mask on and they’re out. It wasn’t as bad as I thought but I do have health anxiety and issues with hospitals so just be prepared. We had soup, pudding, apple sauce, chocolate milk and generally unhealthy but easy eat things but he wanted regular cereal and milk so ate a lot of rice crispies which get nice and soft. Good luck!

@irene: in terms of what to eat, smoothies and shakes are a good way to get through the day. But avoid the straws and fruits with seeds. Adding peanut butter to a shake gets some protein in it. I did nutella,banana, peanut butter and almond milk shakes a lot when I had oral surgery.

@pinkb: Thank you so much for sharing!! I hope this all goes over smoothly too...

@looch: We were instructed not to have anything to eat / drink after midnight (the tough part is that hopefully he doesn't wake up in the middle of the night/super early in the morning and get a drink and says he forgot he couldn't!). I was told he will be out / asleep but he will still has a sense of the surrounding. I am not entirely sure if an anesthesiologist will be there to adminster the meds and monitor.

@muffinsmuffins: We had tubes put in too and gosh, I hope this will be different! We had the same experience as you did, as there was a period of intense crying afterwards (so bad I thought my child was possessed by demons / needed an exorcism ), but that was also when he was a lot younger, 18 months old.

@Mrsbells: Thank you so much....! The problem is DS doesn't drink anything other than water and milk! He won't even try juices. He would eat an orange no problem but not when the orange became juice in a cup. He doesn't really eat yogurt either. Milk and ice cream are the only 2 sure things so far in my menu for Friday

They told me scrambled eggs are fine too (which DS would eat with no problem), but in my culture (Chinese) we had this belief to avoid eggs and shell fish (eg. shrimp) when you have a wound to heal as they believe that these two kinds of foods promotes infection. I never really believe it but in this case I kinda lean toward avoiding them just in case there were an oz of truth to it. Haha. Argh.

I also bought these soft buns that I thought about steaming them warm and see if he can eat that way, but now I am thinking probably any chewing motion would not be good?

@irene: It sounds like he is going under twilight sedation. I had that when I had my wisdom teeth out. I wasn't completely under, but I don't remember anything either. The oral surgeon administered it, not an anesthesiologist.

For the first day, I honestly wouldn't worry if the only thing he wants to eat is ice cream. He may not want anything at all, I had to force myself to eat something. Smoothies are a good idea too, I would just use a spoon and not a straw.

A coworkers child had a trauma to her mouth and they had to have emergency surgery to repair it. She had stitches right in the front of her gums (they had to remove the baby teeth). She bounced back pretty quickly and was able to eat soft foods the next day.

They will probably give him antibiotics, make sure they do liquid if you don't think he will take a pill. He might even have anti-nausea medication.

DS had general anesthesia this fall at 5 when he had all 8 molars capped. The worst parts were when they put him out and the after in recovery waking up. He luckily doesn’t remember any of this. By dinner time he was fine. We just had a lazy day. He got as much ice cream, popsicles & jello as he wanted. He did then request & eat pizza for dinner.

The fasting was hard too. Nothing after midnight and his procedure was at noon. My MIL was here to help so she fasted with him.

@KT326: Thank you so much for the tips and sharing of all the experience and stories! I will make sure I ask for liquid meds as well as anti-nausea medication. Note to self : Must be a meds that tastes good too.

@ALV91711: Thank you for sharing the experience -- yikes, 8 molars capped at 5?! Yes, I am worried about the fasting too. Even though our surgery appt is at 7:45am (we are asked to arrive at 7:45am), DS wakes up very early, and he always want to do things that he is asked NOT to do. I'll some how have to get up at 6am and fend him off of anything around water.... The other day he said, oh so if I eat something then they can't do the operation? Yay! Yikes! I hope it doesn't give him any ideas because I know he isn't cite about the surgery. He just didn't know how hard it was to make the appointment and what are the consequences if we don't do it...

Thank you so much all! Fingers crossed that we will be OK too.

@KT326: Thank you so much for asking! Yes it all went as well as it could! I was a little surprised when it is not exactly a twilight sedation - they actually hooked him to the heart rate / blood pressure ...etc. monitor those when he was half sedated, and as he was almost out they walked me out, and told me he will be on IV! I didn't expect that. The nurse that introduced herself and brought us back was I believe an anesthesiologist.

I was a little emotional when I brought DS in and he was overall super active; and when I go back in after they were done, he was unconscious / about to wake up and he had a big piece of gauze in his mouth, murmuring inaudible words. It strangely reminded me of my mom and my dad when they were about to pass away (my mom recently passed away so everything touches a very sensitive chord).

He also got out of the anesthesia pretty gracefully, no crying.

But otherwise, he seemed to bounce back pretty well! They removed his wiggly 2 front teeth too, I kinda expected that it would happen. He hasn't really eaten since this morning and he still didn't want to eat. He had half a cup of ice cream an hour ago and he said he was "full". Earlier he was mildly nauseated and he seems fine now.

They gave me 4 teeth: 2 extra teeth that he grew, and 2 were the baby teeth they took out. Gosh I hope they took out the ones they supposed to take out and leave the ones that are supposed to be in in. But then there is no way to tell until we see an x ray. eeeeek.

Thank you again, all, for your advice! This really really helped me be mentally prepared. I am glad all goes well and I hope we manage to stay well until he recovers in the next few days!

@irene: Sounds exactly like my twilight sedation, I had BP monitor, heart rate and IV. Glad he is doing so well!

@KT326: I had no idea! I had teeth trauma (my front two teeth were knocked out by DS a few years ago - bicycle accident. Thinking about it tooth fairy must be giving him a revenge LOL) before and I was knocked out without all those monitors and an IV! And I was out! I thought THAT was "twilight" enough.

I only wish he ate a bit more. He didn't eat anything at all other than half a bowl of ice-cream, and two small bowls of rice soup/porridge, and a few sips of water. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
